Nike, Reebok Give Vick the Boot
Source: AP

07.27.07, 7:00 PM ET

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - Nike suspended its lucrative contract with Michael Vick on Friday, while Reebok took the unprecedented step of stopping sales of his No. 7 jersey.

In another dose of bad news for the indicted quarterback, a top trading card company announced it was pulling Vick's likeness from any new packs.

Facing protests from animal-rights groups, Nike (nyse: NKE - news - people ) announced it was suspending Vick's endorsement deal without pay, as well as halting sales of Vick-related shoes and other products at its retail stores.

"Nike is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick, and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent," Nike spokesman Dean Stoyer said in a statement.

1. Sweet! I'm happy to hear this, but
I have to point out...

Most of Nike shoes are made from leather. "...any cruelty to animals..." sort of rings with a hypocritical ringtone to me.

Not belittling what they've done, as I know that most folks don't see things the same way. Just my 2 cents.

14. Oh, yeah. Leather! Right. Glad you made this profound observation.
That should shut everyone up.

You should probably send a message to the Humane Society. They'll want to change direction.

2. Nike, Reebok, et al, have pit the workers of the world in a race to the bottom
against each other that makes Vick's treatment of those poor dogs look benevolent in comparison.

7. Nothing makes his treatment of the dogs look benevolent.
Can't we just say that Nike, Reebok, Adidas, etc. suck in many ways without diminishing this situation?

22. If the guy is guilty ...
I hope for a LOT worse for him...

I'm thinking ... Vick, by himself, in a cage match to the death against a tag team of Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

5. It's NOT only animal rights groups that are hoping Vick will just
disappear! A AOT of Falcon fans are screaming too! These contracts are ALL about IMAGE! The celebrity screws up his image, that reflects back to the Company product. I wonder if it's occurred to Vick just how damn dumb this excapade really was?

9. It appears Atlanta is stuck with Vick and his mind-boggling contract
He's the second-highest paid player in the NFL, but who would take his contract? Who would take him, period?

No doubt the Falcon front-office has lawyers pouring over Vick's contract, trying to find some way to null-and-void it.

10. I would think there are some teams who would
take him warts and all.(Raiders for one) Some would probably wait a year, especially if he ends up with a slap on the wrist, then go for him.

21. I wouldn't single out the RAIDERS, man...
Just because my team have a bit of a 'bad-boy' sorta image, Al Davis is NOT one to f**k around with a player that had something of this level of seriousness on his record. I challenge you to name ONE player that the Raiders have ever picked up that had anything like this on his record, even if Vick were to just get a slap on the wrist (if he's guilty of actually 'operating' this ring, I believe he should get LWOPOP - course, that'll never happen to someone with his riches...).

Back to the Raiders, the most extreme cases one could come up with are Randy Moss (who apparently bumped a cop with his car and got a wrist slap) and Romanowski, whose antics were mostly on-field and in-practice and never prosecuted.

Go ahead, enlighten me as to which other hard-core criminals the Raiders have ever knowingly picked up?

Many people will "excuse" domestic violence, rape, criminal drug use, DUIs, etc. But, many of those same people love their pets, and consider this pretty unforgivable.

12. Maybe, but every employment contract, especially those in sports,
have a morals clause. I have no idea what one is written like for the NFL much less what's actually in Vick's contract, but they ALWAYS have that as an out.

13. Nike: cruelty to animals = bad publicity=less $$ for Nike.
They don't care about dogs or people, they're just trying to avert the inevitable boycott.

17. The only problem
I have with that is people can defend themselves or remove themselves from the situation. Animals can't. I despise sweat shops but the people have the ability to reason and socialize, they have time off to be with loved ones. I don't think you can reasonably compare the two in this case. .02

People working in sweat shops "have time off to be with loved ones" and can "reason and socialize" can they?

Fucking brilliant.

ON EDIT: Here. Let me help.

Read this and then tell me how the workers can socialize and visit friends if they can't even get enough time to go to the shitter?

Which is what I'm doing - pointing out the hilarity of their "coming down the mountain" on animal cruelty.

16. I work for a chain of retail stores
and we pulled them off the salesfloor a few days ago. Interestingly, our buyer has not heard anything from our Reebok or Nike reps.

I have a feeling we're going to get stuck with a lot of leftover Vick jerseys.
