Reid Urges Republicans to Divert War to Bin Laden From Iraq
Source: Bloomberg

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid urged Republican colleagues to help end the war in Iraq and redeploy the U.S. military to defeat al-Qaeda.

``Osama bin Laden remains on the loose, making videos, mocking America, planning attacks,'' Reid said in the Democratic Party's radio address, three days before the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the U.S.

(snip)
Democrats say they'll keep pressing to enact a binding pullout plan. They face their own political imperative: satisfying party antiwar activists and voters who gave them control of Congress last year in large part because of discontent over the war.

``Many Republicans spent the summer saying that September would be the time to change direction,'' Reid said. ``September is here. Now they must finally stand with Democrats, our troops and the American people by voting to responsibly end the war.''

1. Finally.... telling it like it is!
I've been saying the exact same thing for the past 5 - 1/2 years... ever since resources were diverted from nailing Osama, Mullah Mohammed Omar and the evil Doctor Aiyman al Zawahri to preparing for the Iraq misadventure!

I am SO RELIEVED to finally seeing at least SOME politicians to be telling it like it is... I only hope that a few Republicans start listening too!

3. Making videos, mocking America...
What exactly did he say in the video? I haven't been able to find it, and all the coverage I've seen just goes on about authenticity and how he's looking. I understand the importance of authenticating the video, but I'd like to know what was said... Kind of the point of having a video isn't it?

I'm sure the Repubs will back pedal like always... Did we say September, well, maybe we should give them more time. etc etc.

5. Yes and it makes sense

One of the major concerns was to capture Osama prior to his becoming a Religious Martyr. He has nearly achieved that status in the region.

Capturing him and placing him on trial for crimes against innocent civilians would relieve that

Any thing less only insures perpetual war in the region

7. The tape will help us argue for a more sensible policy (getting out of
Iraq, and refocusing on al Qaeda)

8. Wrong. Countries don't wage war on one single individual. That's crazy
Countries send covert ops out to grab up the guy. Bombing sovereign countries trying to eliminate an individual is nuts.

14. Silly semantics. Ok, let's fight the actual, real Al Qaeda. Better?
Whoever's heading it. OR are DU'ers gonna say that the entire organization is a myth too?

9. Asking one Loyal Bushie to go after another Loyal Bushie is always a mistake

So Osama is quite safe from his Bushie friends.

11. Too late, Harry. Bin Laden and Al Quaida have already won (achieved

their strategic objective of fomenting global Jihad) and we have already lost (failed to achieve our strategic objective of winning Muslim hearts and minds).

Who will have the courage to say that we have lost and to seek a just and enduring peace? N.B. Gains made at the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 that ended 30 Years' War between Protestants and Catholics have pretty much endured to this day. So don't say a just and enduring peace cannot be made. Don't say it unless you want to turn your back on history's example.

12. why do we have to have any effin war at all!!!???
war is not the solution. Did Reid not notice that? A war in Afghanistan would be just as bad as the one in Iraq. Did he never read history?

Why is this man not getting the point?

OBL has been dead since December 2001. Is Senator Reid really that willfully ignorant?
