General Petraeus: Tosses a 4th Quarter Hail Mary Pass
Source: Kucinich.House.Gov

Washington, Sep 10 - In response to the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs joint hearing with General Petraeus, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) issued the following statement:

“This report to Congress represents a 4th quarter strategy to delay the inevitable. General Petraeus has been tasked with stalling Congress to keep the troops in the middle of a civil war.

“General Petraeus has failed to give Congress an independent assessment of the Iraq War. His statement sounds like the President’s talking points.

“Congress should not be mollified into accepting pre-surge troop levels. His talk of troop reductions is simply a dilatory tactic to mislead Congress. That is not progress, but a continuation of the failed strategy that has led us to our current predicament. The only worthy response is for Congress to demand the withdrawal of all troops.

“We do not have to fund the war. We must tell the President NO to any additional funding. No legislation is required. No vote is required. We have the money to bring the troops home. It does not require a vote. The only thing required is honesty, integrity and a willingness to end the war.”

It's so easy. All Americans have to do is wake up and tell their leaders to grow a backbone and do what must be done. Politically, they may not want to do what Kucinich is doing. But he's right and Americans know it.

When you drop the phony issue of "electability", all Democrats would vote for Kucinich.

5. If Congress withdraws all the funding
what will happen to all those poor, hard working contractors and their no-bid contracts? We can't just leave them hanging, or they won't be able to profit from the conflict. Who is going to pay to bring home all those mercenaries? Congress swore behind closed doors to protect the rich corporations and their profits! They can't go back on their word.

6. The answer to the problem of bringing the contractors home
From the http://www2.kucinich.us/iraqplan">Kucinich 12-Point Plan. Scroll down for the plan. Point three addresses the contractors. It is the thing that is done after the US announces it will end the occupation and after the US announces it will use existing funds to bring the troops home:

3. Order a simultaneous return of all US contractors to the United States and turn over all contracting work to the Iraqi government. The contracting process has been rife with world-class corruption, with contractors stealing from the US Government and cheating the Iraqi people, taking large contracts and giving 5% or so to Iraqi subcontractors.

Reconstruction activities must be reorganized and closely monitored in Iraq by the Iraqi government, with the assistance of the international community. The massive corruption as it relates to US contractors, should be investigated by congressional committees and federal grand juries. The lack of tangible benefits, the lack of accountability for billions of dollars, while millions of Iraqis do not have a means of financial support, nor substantive employment, cries out for justice.

It is noteworthy that after the first Gulf War, Iraqis reestablished electricity within three months, despite sanctions. Four years into the US occupation there is no water, nor reliable electricity in Baghdad, despite massive funding from the US and from the Madrid conference. The greatest mystery involves the activities of private security companies who function as mercenaries. Reports of false flag operations must be investigated by an international tribunal.
