Major Ebola outbreak in DR Congo
Source: BBC News

An outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been confirmed by the World Health Organization in Kasai province.

At least 166 people have died and WHO says it is aware of 372 other cases.

Specialist laboratories in Gabon and Atlanta in the US confirmed Ebola from blood samples, saying they also showed the presence of Shigella dysentery.

Ebola is highly contagious. People contracting the disease suffer severe stomach pain and internal bleeding.

1. One of the most frightening books I've ever read
was 'The Hot Zone' by Richard Preston - non-fiction account of an ebola outbreak at a lab in Reston, VA.

Fortunately for us, it ended up only affecting the monkeys there and didn't transmit to humans.

After I read "The Hot Zone", I realized that I had been living in Reston at the time of the events. :scared: I had nightmares for a week.

5. Omg, I believe that lab is still 'dormant'. How terrifying for you! Have
you read:

The Plague Makers - How We Are Creating Catastrophic New Epidemics, and What We Must Do to Avert Them

by Jeffrey A. Fisher

Book News Annotation:
Describes how the indiscriminate use of antibiotics has resulted in the emergence of virulent antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria that could lead to catastrophic epidemics of untreatable disease. Dr. Fisher also proposes that excessive antibiotic use has increased the spread of AIDS to the non-drug-addicted community. He chronicles the discovery of antibiotics, and gives a comprehensive guide to antibiotics and their proper application, with specific advice on which drugs will minimize the development of antibiotic resistance.

More terrifying still and it was printed in 1994.

3. I lived about 5 miles from where that happened: Herndon, VA.
A Virus is a lot like the weather in Michigan: wait a little while, it will change, and you probably won't like what it changes into any better.

6. Sounds like the NW Pa. weather. I believe these diseases
frighten me way more than nuclear capability does. Spreading these around the states would be too easy.

Another reason to doubt al-ciaduh exists, imo. They would have done it already. At Wally World.

4. His other books are great too: read "The Demon in the Freezer"
It documents the ongoing controversy about who has samples of smallpox, who doesn't, and what is being done with it.

7. I could not bring myself to read that one, Tyler. After
the 'PM's', I had enough for awhile. 13 years in fact. When I first started spreading the word on the antibiotic resistance, no one listened. They do now.

Maybe I do need to get it now, in light of the gov. we have.

Smallpox just terrifies me.
