THE Governor of a central Russian province urged couples to skip work today and make love instead.

And if a woman gives birth in exactly nine months time – on Russia's national day on June 12 – she will qualify for a prize.

"It's normally something for the home – a fridge or a television set," Yelena Yakovleva at the Ulyanovsk regional administration press office, said.

Russia wants to reverse a trend in which the population is shrinking by about 700,000 people a year as births fail to outpace a high death rate boosted by AIDS, alcoholism and suicide.

On the other hand, many people in the U.S. are scared to have children thinking that there is no way they will be taken care of with both parents at work constantly, a poor education system, no extra money, and no way to pay health care.

Russian single women hesitate to have children for two reasons:
1) Their lives are difficult in their towns and settings and they need to keep their mobility for better opportunities.
2) Statistically, they don't trust Russian men for life-long reliability because of their tendency to drink too much vodka and become unreliable. The girls tend to have children (with or without a dad around) once they feel secure.
So, there is a problem there which explains why there are so many Russian and Ukrainian young women on dating sites with westerners. Good luck for those of you who are interested. They are fine ladies :)

there needs to be some sort of world court that makes it illegal for gov'ts to offer incentives for "our" religion and racial group to breed -- there is no shortage of people in this world, overpopulation and resulting over-demand on resources is killing the planet

when you read something like this, you know it's hopeless, because gov'ts and religions will never be pleased w. a falling birth rate and a chance for fewer people to share more resources -- all they want is bodies, bodies, bodies
