Mark Warner to Run for Senate Seat
Source: Washington Post

RICHMOND, Sept. 12 -- Former Virginia governor Mark R. Warner will announce in an e-mail to supporters Thursday morning that he plans to run next year for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican John W. Warner.

Sources close to the former governor said Warner has told them he will announce his intention to run for the Senate in 2008, which would set the stage for one of the most competitive races in the country next year.

If so, it could go blue.

His opponent will most likely be Jim Gilmore, the guy he succeeded as Governor.

6. Congressman Davis, Don't forget to check your email tomorrow
Edited on Wed Sep-12-07 07:21 PM by eringer
Tom Davis should call and thank Mark for announcing so early. Betcha Tom now thinks running in his "safe" district is a "slam dunk" compared to challenging Warner. I am looking forward to seeing the RNC wasting big dollars trying to get former VA Governor and RNC Chairman Jim Gilmore elected to the Senate.

14. folks, this will not be an easy win.
The state is turning bluer, but remember that Webb won by a hair over a complete doofus. There are still many red voters in the state and if Tom Davis runs, he'll be a strong candidate for them, much better than Felix Jr.

However, Mark Warner is about the best candidate the Dems. can nominate, so there is a lot of reason for optimism, but it will be as big a fight as Webb's.

15. I don't think so
Lived in Virginia all of my life, and I'm currently in Richmond which is neither NoVa or SoVa.

Mark Warner is the most popular Democrat here in my lifetime (I'm 46). If he goes against Davis it will be an extreme version of North vs South and the rural areas will get their butts kicked. Warner will get over 90% of the votes in the areas with the largest population and will even hold his own in more rural areas. Davis has no chance IMO. Gilmore on the other hand is largely ridiculed for his "no car tax" slight of hand. Hence, he had zero support when he decided to run for president earlier this year. I think you can take this one to the bank. It's gonna be really cool to see this state turn blue... both senate seats and the governorship too! Unfortunately, we still have some smarmy House pugs, but hey, so does California.

16. If Warner has advisors Steve Jarding and Dave Saunders on board
he has a better-than-even chance to win. They managed his successful campaign for Governor, and they wrote about it in their book "Foxes In The HenHouse"

19. Webb was an unknown second tier candidate that had a tiny fraction of Allen's warchest
Mark Warner is a well known extremely popular governor who has already gotten his successor elected largely on his coattails. He will wipe the floor with any Republican.

26. Hi Spooky3!
Long time! :hi: :pals:

Good news about Warner ... I used to live in DC so I like hearing about Virginia ...

I saw on another thread you're an Edwards fan ... He's my guy, too (although at first I was kinda an Obama fan, as well). I'll be happy if either one can overcome Hillary (as much as it would be cool to have a woman prez -- but she's sure not floating my boat) ...

Yes, another thing we have in common!

Hope you'll let me know if you're planning a VA visit any time soon.

Today's WaPo says Tom Davis (R-Fairfax) is likely to be M. Warner's opponent.

18. Davis is in bed w/Government Contracting.... Gilmore doesn't ...
... really have enough general appeal to really bring in Virginia voters. Remember, Mark Warner was able to work, build a Dem coaltion around an issue and, then bring Rs to the table for a compromise. Excellent, talented politician. He was able to move his major agenda points forward, during his time as Governor.

Easy win- though we're gonna have to get out there and support him!!

23. This is perfect!
Warner had some personal issues that prevented him from wanting to
put his family through a bruising national campaign for president,
but a statewide campaign would be perfect for him, and as he is at
least now partially Alexandria-based, as opposed to Richmond, he
could commute from there to the Capitol within half an hour without
disrupting his family life or routine.

There is also the minor benefit to Virginia that they would have one
hell of a fine Senator, to boot. That would make them two for two!
Although Texan for a quarter century now, I was born and bred in
Virginia, and would be thrilled to have my old home state represented
by Jim Webb AND Mark Warner in the Senate. Every state should have
it that good (Texas is still a lost cause for now, but hope springs eternal).
