FBI wants law targeting hats, sunglasses in banks
Source: Seattle Times

The FBI may turn to a new ploy to combat bank robberies: a dress code.

Special Agent Larry Carr plans to work with Washington state lawmakers on legislation that would forbid banks from doing business with customers who wear hats and sunglasses while inside the bank.

... Carr's measure would not include bank customers who wear hats for religious or medical reasons.

Darcy Donahoe-Wilmot, a spokeswoman for Washington Mutual, said it has always been up to tellers to decide whether to ask customers to remove their hats and sunglasses. She said Washington Mutual recently started posting signs in its more than 2,200 branches across the country asking customers to remove all "hoodies, helmets and sunglasses."

17. I don't think so -- this has been going on in banks for a long time.
There has been a movement since the early 90s (or maybe even before that) for banks to post No Hats/No Sunglasses signs to help prevent robberies.

in NJ that was on a bank-robbing spree here recently. He did, however, hit quite a few banks (more than a few, in fact) before his capture.
Thursday, September 13, 2007
Now, it's over. The saga of the "Mad Hatter," that is.

James Madison pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Tuesday to six bank robberies and admitted involvement in 18. He had planned to plead guilty last month, but reconsidered. On Tuesday, he went through with it.

Madison earned the nickname "Mad Hatter" because he sported a different hat during each heist. Partly because of his attire and remarkable string of success, Madison became a celebrity of sorts. Many wondered what his story was, and also, why he never stopped when he was ahead -- like after, say, the 14th successful bank robbery.

In the end, it turned out that Madison was a paroled killer; he had served 20 years for manslaughter.

On Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Chris Christie said he wished the media would avoid "mythologizing" criminals by giving them nicknames. Christie has a fair point, but at the same time, some type of mythology is going to occur when a man continues to get away with robbing banks. The nickname would not have developed if Madison had been caught sooner.

12. The banks want the FBI to do the dirty work for them.
After reading the whole article, it's clear to me that some banks are afraid to institute such a policy because customers won't put up with it and will move to banks without the policy.

If it's the law customers no longer have a choice.

19. They have a sign at the local FCU about this
requesting that people remove hats and sunglasses.

They keep it pretty dark so I usually remove my sunglasses in order to see...don't remove my hat though.

I though about it and decided that the whole idea was pretty damn stupid. I would think that the hat and sunglasses that an actual crook would wear would be as much a part of their permanent outfit as a tattoo.

If you make them take them off at the door, get pictures of them robbing the place on tape, then you use those non-typical, non-representative pictures to try to look for them when they've got their hat and glasses back on; good luck, you f*cking idiot cops...

Very stupid on every level...

Just like the "no firearms" signs/policy posted in banks and other places of business that are frequent targets of armed robberies have proven to be very effective in preventing such crimes from occurring.

See for yourself...

Great Cesar's Ghost!!!! We are just inviting bank robbers to rob us. No wonder we are robbed. I am so glad the FBI is on top of this breach in security.

Now, if I could only get into the bank-it's hard to find the door for all the prohibition stickers.....

Edited to add...I don't think DUer's need the sarcasm icon, but then I don't think we need to post those warnings either.

Since the cameras are usually mounted behind the teller line and near the ceiling, brimmed hats and sunglasses render them almost useless.

about safety deposit box ;)

When checking out your interest, never make a night deposit without checking your safety deposit box before and after your withdrawal. No telling what the yield might be. You may wind up with a little dividend you hadn't counted on. But that might work out ok at tax time, now that you have an additional tax deduction.

Does that work for you Miles:spray:

Tellers and security guards are not paid much and not highly valued employees.

Retail customers don't matter, either.

49. This law might backfire
Outlaw wearing hats and sunglasses might cut down on the type of bank robbery where the robber gives the teller a note demanding money or else.

However, the number of "take over" style bank robberies where robbers brandish guns, tell everybody to get on the floor, and maybe shoot a few people to show they mean business might also go up.
