Iceland phasing out fossil fuels for clean energy
Source: CNN.COM

Iceland maybe best known for world-famous musical export Bjork but there's a new star quickly gaining this island nation world-wide acclaim -- clean energy.

For more than 50 years this rainy-windswept rock of fire and ice has been decreasing its dependence on fossil fuels by tapping the natural power all around them.

Waterfalls, volcanoes, geysers and hot springs provide Icelanders with abundant electricity and hot water.

Virtually all of the country's electricity and heating comes from domestic renewable energy sources -- hydroelectric power and geothermal springs.

6. He he he!!
:-)

Yeah, and I can't want to hear all those solar power hippies whine when their precious little sun runs out of fuel. They'll sure wish they bought Exxon stock when that happens!

8. They'll worry about that when it starts to become a problem, say in 2+ billion years or so.

14. After that, they'll go back to raids
...Viking-style. Take the women and candle oil.

They're lucky to have a solid fall-back plan. :D

7. Iceland is blessed...
...with geothermal power, but it is not a great thing to live on top of a volcanically active area.

In 1783, the was a terrible eruption at Laki that led to the death of 50% of the livestock and 21% of the humans on the island.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laki

I like my geothermal power far, far away.

9. True, though nowadays, Icelanders are quite adept at dealing with seismic activities...
When you live near, or on, in this case, a geographically active place like Iceland, you learn to live with it.

13. Stopped a lava flow
I think it was in the 70's, there was a lava flow approaching a village. Using fire hoses, they cooled the approaching tongue of lava, creating a dam.

11. Let 's take their example
we won't..........we are the worst purveyor and contributers to the "change" and we are not about to let one penny slip from the Almighty god corporations.......meanwhile the world will continue to send warnings which will never be heard and corporations will get more tax breaks.

15. Iceland is blessed with many things,
Geothermal and Wind
Small steady homogeneous population. Population does not exceed resources.
Energy needs concentrated on heat and electricity only. More efficient
Northern mentality, tends to be more progressive in attitude. Opinion
Pagan identity still mostly intact, hence more progressive. Oxymoron
