Husband in polygamist trial charged with rape
Source: Reuters

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The former husband of the woman at the center of a Utah polygamist leader's trial has been charged with rape, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

Allen Steed, 26, was charged by Washington County, Utah prosecutors the day after the leader of a breakaway Mormon polygamy sect was found guilty of being an accomplice to rape for arranging a marriage between Steed and his then-14-year-old cousin.

Warren Jeffs, 51, the self-described "prophet" of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, was convicted on Tuesday on two counts of being an accomplice to the rape of the teen bride.

3. I don't
Regardless of the societal pressures, he's still responsible for his own actions, IMO. And rape -- of a 14 yo no less -- is still rape.

12. Even if he were forced to marry her, he did not have to consummate.
He could have waited but the "poor victim" did not. Hope they know he's a child abuser in prison.

14. he was a virgin
and not even knowledgeable re sex...acknowledged that he was "clumsy"...waited 3 weeks to make a move. Truly..all those people are victims. If you watched his testimony you would have thought he was retarded.

15. That's very zealous of you
What he did was clearly wrong, and he will be rightfully prosecuted for it, but, "Hope they know he's a child abuser in prison." Come on, this guy was 19 at the time and had been conditioned from an early age by religious leaders. While that in no way excuses his actions, it definitely mitigates his status as a "child abuser," just a bit. It's ok to demonstrate compassion toward people, even those who have done terrible things.

2. while in Utah
I remember the Governor of the state saying he would not inter fer in this particular case because he did not want to overstep on their religious rights.

4. Their religious rights end at someone else's nose.
They cannot "practice" a religion that requires raping young girls and women.

This isn't about religious rights, this is about whether we're going to hold to the law or not.

6. Not only is it rape, it is also incest...
The husband(?)is her 1st cousin. Three or four generations down the road, this family will be all chipmonks.

Too bad this trial couldn't be held in another state.

7. Read Jon Krakauer's "Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith"
I'm sure that the Jeffs jurors were asked if they were familiar with Krakauer's book on the dark side of Mormanism.

9. I always think "infuriating."
Religious license for pedophilia in a state with a history of a blind eye.

BTW: What's the difference between a "cult" and a "religion?" A "religion" is a "cult" with the approval of the state.

10. very informative book
thats where i had previously heard of these people before the trial; theres a chapter just about their little compound colorado city (i think, its been a while) His dad Rulon Jeffs was actually more twisted and worse than his son, if that is possible. These people should have been brought to justice years ago, its been known/documented what was going on there, but no one took action.

11. Oh B-I-N-G-O! I'd forgotten about dad.
I need to re-read that book. When my B/P is nice and stable. Not 2-night. It's running 170/110 due to a run-in with an assholic general contractor today. The attenolol will help.
