UC fined $3 million for lab breach
By SUE MAJOR HOLMES
Associated Press Writer

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Department of Energy on
Friday fined the University of California $3 million for
a security breakdown at Los Alamos National
Laboratory last year.

During an Oct. 2006 drug raid, Los Alamos city police
discovered more than 1,000 pages of classified
documents and several computer storage devices at
the trailer of a former worker for a lab subcontractor.
The subcontractor pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor,
saying she took the information home to catch up on
scanning documents.

The university has denied violating the Energy
Department's requirements and said it was not
responsible because a subcontractor's employee, not
a university employee, committed the security breach.
The school also noted it was not the lab manager at
the time.

The National Nuclear Security Administration said the
university is still responsible for "structural management
deficiencies."
