Thompson defends gay marriage stance

By MIKE GLOVER, Associated Press Writer Mon Oct 1, 5:16 PM ET

NEWTON, Iowa - Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson said he's met frequently with influential social conservatives who are willing to accept his position on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage even though it doesn't go quite as far as they would like.

Thompson favors a constitutional amendment that bars judges from legalizing gay marriage, but also leaves open the door for state legislatures to approve the practice. He said social and religious conservatives who would prefer an amendment that also bars legislatures from legalizing gay marriage can live with his view.

"Everyone I have talked to in my meetings like this, the answer has been yes," said Thompson. He conceded there are reservations.

2. You know when you're watching little kids interact and they don't know,
or don't care, that you're watching, and you find it hilarious how clumsily they mimic adult behaviours? Reading this article was kind of like that, except utterly devoid of the charm, cuteness and actual hilarity.

3. Courts interprate the law, they don't make it.
So conceivably, under Thompson's illogical amendment, the courts would be denied their constitutional responsibility.

8. Plenty of gays in the movie industry
Where he's made plenty of bucks.

He obviously doesn't like - or try to understand - any of them.

10. so as I understand this . . . a state could pass legislation legalizing
gay marriage.

But in any court challenge, the judge would have to rule against gay marriage.

Do I have that right? Does this make any sense at all?
