White House threatens to veto housing bill
Source: Reuters

The Bush administration on Tuesday threatened to veto Democratic-written legislation designed to provide affordable housing for low-income families, saying it opposed the way a newly-created trust fund would be financed.

While the administration said it supports helping the poor gain housing, it "strongly opposes the establishment of an Affordable Housing Trust Fund financed by diverting Federal Housing Administration (FHA) receipts and housing-related Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) revenues."

The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to debate the bill on Wednesday. The measure enjoys strong Democratic support and is also backed by some House Republicans.

In warning Congress of a possible veto, the White House budget office said the legislation was not needed because it overlaps with programs that are already available.

1. Rec'd with disgust. If there are existing programs, this legislation
wouldn't be needed. Is that so tough? I don't know anything about this bill, but the response is predictable. The wh is fighting the majority tooth and nail, making themselves look petty and worse in the process.

32. I didn't know the Administration was running for anything
It also makes the Democrats look weak and pathetic when they can not accomplish anything because they "don't have the votes" We will see if they are able to get enough Republicans on board to override Bush*'s veto on the SCHIPS bill. Republicans are starting to really feel the pressure on National Health Care. They know it is something everyone in America understands is broken and needs fixing. They just haven't yet figured out the reason it is broken is because it is being handled in a Republican "for Profit" manner. Romney in the debates last night suggested we should export our Health Care to help our economy. It blew my mind that he is so stupid...

18. Sure it is
Pardon everyone else, including Cheney, on the afternoon of Jan. 19th, then resign, effective midnight. Cheney gets sworn in at the stroke of midnight by his pal Aleito, then pardons Bush.

Then the lot of them get to sleep so they'll be refreshed and ready for their ceremonial departure the next day, secure in the knowledge that they'll forever be above the law.

Oh, and don't forget not to let anyone know about this shenanigan until after the other guy is sworn in on the 20th.

23. Yes you are right that is another possability
and its one reason why I have thought that the ability for the president to pardon people for the past 25 years or so needs an overhaul and add in some oversight.
It's clear few to no presidents have used it except for questionable pardons and often more than to cover their own asses so if they cant use it properly it needs to be taken from them.
Perhaps setup a small committee 6 person committee randomly picked from congress and the senate to approve any pardons to be submitted to the president for consideration just to make sure no cronies for the president are granted a pardon to cover his ass otherwise they are required to pass all pardons on.

24. I don't think Bush will even need to resign.
All he'll have to do is invoke the 25th Amendment for a few hours so that Cheney will have the full powers of the presidency...and then he can pardon Herr Shrub, then just hand the reigns back when all the forms are signed.

Sigh.

15. the Senate banking committee has no immediate plans to ratify that bill or take up its own version o
Under the Massachusetts Democrat's plan, the fund would get a cash infusion from a charge on government-sponsored mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well as from a new fee structure for the FHA.

In the first year of the fund, all money would be earmarked for victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. But the fate of the fund is tied to legislation to reform Fannie and Freddie as well as the FHA.

While Frank has pushed a reform bill through the House, the Senate banking committee has no immediate plans to ratify that bill or take up its own version of reform.

The administration has said it supports FHA reform, but the affordable housing provision could be carved out of any final legislation.

16. WH is vetoing money to Katrina victims and FHA reform.
"In the first year of the fund, all money would be earmarked for victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. But the fate of the fund is tied to legislation to reform Fannie and Freddie as well as the FHA."

Bush/Cheney really, truly do not care what they give the Democrats to campaign with next fall, do they.

Now the Dems can say Republicans

1. Fight endless wars for oil

2. Deny health care to children

3. Torture

4.Deny housing to Katrina victims

5. And want to keep from reforming the ailing home mortgage industry.

Ouchies! It is a bad time to be an elephant.

If they keep up this privatization frenzy and the population of unemployed, and uninsured Americans grows, we're gonna have a hell of a demographic on our side, and we won't see this lot in washington for a very, very long time.

21. Programs are "already available"! That why my rent takes up 2/3rds of my income!
I pay $600 a month for my apartment, which, as a studio, is the cheapest I could find near my school that wasn't bug-infested or in someone's basement.

I go to school full-time, so I can only afford to work my minimum-wage job part time, but "luckily" I also get ever-varying SSI disability income because, oh yea, I also have cerebral palsy.

On the West Coast where I live, high housing prices like this are the norm and many poor people with disabilities aren't anywhere near as "well off" as I am, and end up living in roach-infested single-occupany hotel rooms. ::sarcasm:: But hey, they're already getting a federal government handout, sometimes as much as $600 a month! Surely they can help themselves!

FUCK YOU BUSH.

This bill only creates new funding for affordable housing (and it's basically to construct affordable rental units and single family dwelling units for purchase, not for rental assistance), so any existing assistance you already have will not be affected in any way by this.

Remember all those tax breaks for the rich? Well the math is quite simple. The tax revenues that are no longer being collected are no longer funding programs to assist those who are at the other end of the economic spectrum. And there are poorly-funded programs already available for godzsake! Who cares if they only cover a drop in the bucket. Hey, that's O.K., the conservative wealth restructuring bunch who saw the tax breaks through are all perfectly good Christians. And God helps those who help themselves (to the National Treasury that is, Bush cronies and all!).
