Blackwater says lawsuit 'politically motivated'
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Blackwater USA founder Erik Prince on Sunday dismissed as "politically motivated" a lawsuit filed against his security company by a wounded survivor and relatives of three Iraqis killed in Baghdad on Sept. 16.

In an interview with CNN's "Late Edition," Prince defended the work of the private company which has faced intense scrutiny after 17 people were killed when Blackwater employees opened fire on civilians.

The incident has created friction between Iraq and United States and prompted calls for tighter controls on private contractors working for the United States, who are immune from prosecution in Iraq.

U.S. military reports from the scene of the shooting indicated Blackwater guards opened fire without provocation and used excessive force. The Iraqi government has accused Blackwater of deliberately killing the 17, and wants Blackwater to pay $8 million in compensation to each victim's family.

2. POLITICALLY Motivated?
Well, if the desire for punishment for a crime, revenge, and economic compensation are too pedestrian, I suppose there might be a political component to prosecution, as well.

3. And Says It, Ma'am, Like That Were A Bad Thing....
Of course it is politically motivated, and aimed at getting his company ham-strung financially and out of Iraq and business entirely. these are all very good things....

16. They attempt make "politically motivated" become a synonym of "dirty politics"
Edited on Sun Oct-14-07 06:40 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
When in reality many of the greatest actions ever done for humanity were politically motivated.

When a group of citizens band together and request an action be taken for the common good of the population that is, by the rawest definition of the word, politics. When a group of citizens band together to protect themselves from being held accountable for their bad actions, that's dirty politics.

We are a politically motivated culture, and I for one don't intend to let them bastardize what that represents.

18. Those Iraqis are so touchy!
Wound a guy, kill a few of his relatives without provocation, and suddenly everybody's running for the lawyers! Getting so that being a mercenary is almost more trouble than it's worth. Maybe it's time for another fat appropriation; will that make you feel all better, Mr. Prince?

24. A wrongful death is a wrongful death and
the personal representative of the estate of a deceased person is authorized to file a lawsuit against those responsible for the person's death. Liability may arise for both negligent and intentional acts. Blackwater should be held for the deaths of the innocent.

26. I think Blackwater is functioning as planned

They are/were a disposable assault force.

It allows folks at the pentagon to say "ah, we found the problem, it wasn't us, it was this private company."

Blackwater will be fined / sued for $100 million, and keep the rest of the $1 Billion they were paid, and Prince will retire.

The individual fighters will simply join another mercenary company, and go back to work.
