Rice: Now is time for Palestinian state
Source: AP

RAMALLAH, West Bank - Secretary of State Condoleezza said Monday it was "time for the establishment of a Palestinian state," and described Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts as the most serious in years.

An international peace conference expected to take place in Annapolis, Md., in November has to be substantive, Rice said at a news conference with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

"We frankly have better things to do than invite people to Annapolis for a photo op," she said.

Israelis and Palestinians, Rice added, are making their "most serious effort" in years to resolve the conflict.

29. Its like declaring, while in the middle of a serious meeting, that it's time
to play racquet ball.

WTF.

It will probably distract the media for a couple days though.

35. It's no wonder the rest of the world thinks we're idiots....
The international media, not nearly as stupid and gullible as our own (Olbermann excepted, of course) doesn't fall for the "Lets Say It REALLY LOUD" approach to spin. Personal smears and Big Lies don't travel very far in the international echo chamber.

most of the West Bank.
with its annexation wall and the Israeli control and ethnic cleansing taking place in the Jordan Valley.
This "State" Israel says the Palestinians can have will be nothing more than a series of Bantustans... maybe that's enough for the likes of Abbas, but it will not be enough to bring real peace for Palestinians and Israelis.

6. Which democratic president
Edited on Mon Oct-15-07 08:49 AM by midlife_mo_Jo
can assure LASTING peace from the palestinian side who will never be happy until they control all of Israel?

I don't think such a person exists, frankly, from either party.

8. 'control all of Israel'
oh please, the palestinians have long ago given up hope on getting all of Palestine back, as you well know. The question is, will the israeli side ever give up complete control of the west bank and gaza? that is the real situation, not some fiction about palestinians controlling israel in any way, shape of form.

12. There's no reason to believe that
Edited on Mon Oct-15-07 10:03 AM by midlife_mo_Jo
a small minority won't continue to create havoc and terror. None.

That minority continues to believe that Israel doesn't have a right to even exist, and they will never be satisfied.

Go ahead and play your "fear" card. Yeah, I'm just stupid and fearful because I happen to take this small group of Palestinians at their word. After all, they don't "really" mean what they say. They're just bluffing.

15. There are nutcases everywhere
H3ll, I'm sure you could find some 'necks down south that to this day would love to secede from the U.S. I say, give peace a chance, and let the Palestinians have their own country, (including East Jerusalem), and give them a land corridor to connect the West Bank and Gaza.

Even with our differences of opinion, I have attempted to extend the olive branch to you during more heated arguments.

You, however, have continued to attack me, probably because I remind you that most democrats don't want to turn the U.S. into Cuba. We want a mixed economy with strong social programs and corporate regulation. Must suck to be you, huh? You'll never get your dream, and you know it.

You're officially on my ignore list. As a matter of fact, you have the honor of being the first.

13. Control all of Israel?
They don't control any of Palestine yet. They aren't allowed airports or free trade of commerce. Israel already in the discussions has stated its military must have free reign in the West Bank even after a Palestinian state is created. These talks won't go anywhere because the status quo benefits Israel. They can continue to grow where they wish to grow and get all the aid they need to run their economy from the U.S.

37. "...who will never be happy until they control all of Israel? "
The depth of your ignorance is astounding.

First of all, um, no. All the Palestinians want is for the Israelis to vacate the occupied territories, and allow them to establish an independent Palestinian nation as per the UN mandate in 1947-8.

Second of all, it was ALL Palestinian land in the first place. Keep that in mind

If a foreign population came to the hills of WV and kicked me off of MY land, you can bet your ass that I would fight them to the death. So would many, many of my neighbors. And yeah, I'd probably teach my children to fight for what is rightfully theirs as well.

Edited on Tue Oct-16-07 12:44 AM by Kool Kitty
The only thing I can remember her doing was shopping for Ferragamos (sp?) and seeing "Spamalot" while New Orleans drowned. Some legacy.

My bad-I completely forgot her lack of imagination about how terrorists might attack us, even after receiving a briefing on a warning entitled, "Osama Bin Laden determined to attack in the US". Useless. Might just be the worst Sec of State we have ever had. Certainly one of the most ineffectual.

...and most of the Publicans, too, throw Condi under the bus in their haste to assure the pro-Israel bloc (AIPAC and the fundies who want to bring about the apocalypse) that they would never pressure "our Israeli allies" in this way.

Ten bucks says Hillary will be in the lead on this, too. :puke:
