Anti-Gay Church Says Thompson Agreed
Source: AP via Fox

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Members of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church are urging Fred Thompson to support their stance on homosexuality _ a position on which they say the Republican presidential candidate once "saw eye to eye" with them.

Thompson was hired for a mid-1980s legal case in Kansas on the recommendation of Margie Phelps, daughter of Westboro founder Fred Phelps.

The Topeka, Kan.-based church is now best known for protesting at soldiers' funerals, claiming their deaths are retribution for the nation's acceptance of homosexuality.

1. Even Thompson is not dumb enough to associate himself with this group.

3. Hey, give Fred some credit
A statement like that, he's sure to consider it a challenge. Let's give him a chance to show us how dumb he is.

7. Personally, I'd like to see him pressed on this issue.
What about Phelps did he agree with then and what does he disagree with now? He can't be TOO opposed to Phelps opinions of gays without angering his core constituency of gay-hating Freeper wing-nuts. But agreeing with Phelps on anything would be repugnant to most decent Americans. I think reporters need to ask him a few questions about this.

8. thinking about Phelps actually gives me hope
only 20 years ago he was so connected in Washington and in political circles (...shamefully, within the democratic party) that politicians sought his endorsement and even invited him to Inaugural Balls.

by '97 he'd lost his grip (both on his sanity and on his political connections) and chose not to attend but to picket instead.

today everyone on the right and the left do everything in their power to distance themselves from him.
