Romney Calls Global Body a 'Failure'

Thursday October 18, 2007 5:16 PM

By JIM DAVENPORT

Associated Press Writer

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney called the United Nations a failure on Thursday and said he would support a new coalition of the free nations of the world.

The former Massachusetts governor said the U.N. Human Rights Council has repeatedly condemned Israel while taking no action against nations with repressive regimes.

``The United Nations has been an extraordinary failure of late,'' Romney said in response to a question at a pancake house along the coast of early voting South Carolina. ``We should withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council.''

Actually, the United States doesn't have a seat on the human rights council, which it has been boycotting.

2. His usual blame game pattern
did the same thing as governor. He went after:

The MBTA

Big Dig

Chief of Police

Chancellor of U Mass Boston

Always pointing fingers and blaming people, but never does a lick of work. Not a single original idea or constructive engagement.

3. This is kind of funny downward spiral to watch ...
as the Republicans trip over each other trying to show how much of a bigger junk they have compared to the others. Pretty soon, Guliani will say he'd nuke China just for fun to see what happens, then Romney will say, "Oh yea? I'll strap myself to a nuke and bomb France while reciting the Lord's Prayer!" Guliani: "That ain't nothin'! I'll personally execute all Mexican immigrants and then fly some airplanes into a few buildings and cry out 'God is Great!' Top that, Romney loser!"

6. They'd love it if they were in charge of it and all the other nations observed proper fealty.

9. To be fair, it seems to me that conservatives hate the UN,
because it infringes on our sovereignty. We are prevented, at times, from doing what we want to do when we want to do.

Liberals, OTOH, seem to have similar feelings about the WTO, because it prevents us from unilaterally changing our tariffs and quotas to prevent economic problems in the US. In their view, this limits our sovereignty by keeping us from running our country and economy in the manner we wish.

Both are international organizations that you join voluntarily, but once a member, you are subject to their rules and conditions until you withdraw or the rules are renegotiated.

10. I guess I get that
but the bare hate that so many rank-and-file seem to have against it is amazing.
