Martinez quits as RNC chairman By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer
5 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Mel Martinez, the public face of the Republican National Committee as its general chairman, announced Friday he was stepping down from his post after serving only 10 months.

"I believe that our future as a party and nation is bright and I have every intention of continuing to fight for our president, our party, and our candidates," the Florida senator said in a statement.

He said he was relinquishing the post to spend more time focusing on his constituents, and because the RNC reached the objective it set out to when he assumed the role last fall.

"It was my goal as general chairman to lead the party as it established the structure and raised the resources necessary to support our presidential candidate and ensure Republican victories next November. I believe we have accomplished those goals," Martinez said.

The RNC picked Bush in 2000. I think they want to do the same sort of thing here.

8. C'mon. It's not right before an election.
We aren't even halfway through the election cycle.

This gives someone else a chance to turn around the dismal fundraising before then.

Good luck with that.

9. He supported amnesty for undocumented immigrants
That's the mark of death for xenophobes. They were probably getting too many angry phone calls and letters every time they sent something out with his name on it.

It would be like the DNC naming Lieberman as chairman, then wondering why the contributions were drying up.

18. He didn't even make it through an election cycle.
What this says to me is that they want a chairman who is going to pick the presidential candidate for the voters. I don't know who the party wants. I'd guess Guiliani or Huckabee. I think those are their two best choices. 9/11 or a good republican candidate.

24. Some additional incentive (courtesy of Politico)
Republican sources say there were two driving factors in Martinez's departure. First, Martinez is facing a much tougher than expected race in 2010 and believes he needs to focus more on taking care of his political and policy priorities in Florida. According to a Quinnipiac University poll released in July, Martinez had an approval rating of 38 percent in Florida, the lowest since he was elected.

27. Martinez Quits as G.O.P. Chairman
Source: NYT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Mel Martinez, the public face of the Republican National Committee as its general chairman, announced Friday he was stepping down from his post after serving only 10 months.

''I believe that our future as a party and nation is bright and I have every intention of continuing to fight for our president, our party and our candidates,'' the Florida senator said in a statement.

(snip)

Martinez, who is up for re-election in 2010, said he was relinquishing the job to spend more time focusing on his constituents and because the RNC had achieved the objective he set when he assumed the job in January.

Well, at least it shows a bit more imagination than resigning "to spend more time with his family".

Translation (as if one is needed): "Man the lifeboats! Fat Cats and Politicos first!"

40. Ohhh! I envy you!
It's been one of my dreams to visit Tibet before I die. My sister and I have a pact to go there for her 70th birthday, if we can't make it sooner (and events in that mirror are closer than they look). Most of the legitimate "Tibetan" stuff I've found is made by refugees in India or Nepal. Of course, there's a lot that comes China, but I wouldn't buy that Karma for all the tea. If it wasn't made in a sweatshop, it probably got "confiscated", which would be even worse.

41. When you go
my only advice it to try to know someone there who speaks a little english. Communication was much harder than I thought, since most Tibetans don't speak or read Chinese very well and vice versa. With your knowledge of Buddhism, I think you would find the sites and the people very amazing, and the Chinese presence very saddening.

The Potala Palace is now my favorite building (to look at) in the world. Seeing Chinese guards inside it is a bit disappointing but from the outside... I never got tired of looking at it.

44. There was an old "Dr. Who" episode
In which the Good Doctor - trying to ascend out of a sticky situation - grabs a book titled "How to Climb Mount Everest" and exclaims "It's written in Tibetan!". The next shot shows him holding a volume of "Teach Yourself Tibetan".

I need that second book, since I have no intention of trying the first. :hi:

33. Ha, I just came from you know where, and here are some ideas of
who they have in mind for Martinez's replacement. They are thrilled to be rid of him, amnesty was a killer for them. Anyhoo, everyone from Newt, Pat Buchanan, Christy Whitman, Steele, and my favorite, of course, Rush. It's a hoot to read some of their stuff....

42. I can't abide the man myself
If he's taken a progressive stance on immigration, that's the only decent thing he's done. Of course, I doubt he did it because he was decent: here in Florida, the Cuban refugees are a powerful political force, and most of them want to ease restrictions on their fellow countrymen immigrating.

The man ran what had to be one of the most hateful election campaigns I've had the sorrow to witness, and this is Florida. We're in competition with Texas to see who can churn out the vilest, most gut-punching political slurs. I had to wash my hands with Lava soap after picking up his campaign literature in my daily mail.

Every time someone on this board urges "Write your Senator!" I feel like snarling "Fat lot of good that'll do".

Then I sigh, and do it anyway. Hope trumps experience.

I have been following Martinez chairmanship from the beginning. The conservative base never accepted the 'hispanic' Martinez as the new gop head. They saw him as an outsider a hispanic. The hardcore conservatives believe the gop support for the illegal alien 'amnesty' was his work.
