Muted discomfort of Libyan UN Security Council election
Source: Jimma Times

Some officials in Ethiopia expressed concern about recent decisions to elect Libya for a UN Security Council non-permanent seat. Behind closed doors; the basis of selecting Libya was questioned (...)

Analysts insist the concern for Ethiopia is more “symbolic” than concrete, but since Libya was one of the underground financers of the Islamist extremists in Mogadishu as stated by the UN Security Council itself, they claim selecting Libya to the council was “irrational.”

Kidnapping foreigners and threatening to kill them (unless hundreds of million dollars are paid as ransom), bombing US-bases and supporting terrorist groups in neighboring countries ... I wonder what on earth justifies giving this terrible nation a seat in the UN Security Council? I guess that a lot of money is involved in this strange process ...

1. Well Libya did agree to disarm
it's WMD's. Perhaps when nations start being proactive like that they should be given more in return. If there is no incentive for them to continue good behavior..they aren't going to. Just my take. Also, every member of the permanent council is doing or has recently done something that most of us wouldn't approve of. Most member nations have a dark past or present. I think the UN would be much better off if countries like Canada, Sweden, Swtizerland, South Africa, Costa Rica and others had more power.

2. But this is ridiculous
when you consider what the Libyans did only a few weeks ago, when they threatened to murder the
foreigners, who came to Libya to help this country:
