Fires race through Southern California, destroy Malibu landmarks
Source: Los Angeles Times

By Scott Glover and Bettina Boxall, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
8:22 PM PDT, October 21, 2007

More than a dozen wind-driven firestorms consumed up to 35,000 acres across Southern California today, including a vast expanse of northern Los Angeles County where 10 structures were destroyed, 800 homes were evacuated and additional 3,800 residences were threatened.

The fires raced through dry growth in hilly terrain stretching from Santa Barbara County to the Mexican border. In San Diego County, one person was killed and at least 14 injured, four of them firefighters.

Near the 14 Freeway leading to Palmdale, three people suffered burn injuries in the so-called Buckweed Fire, which began near Agua Dulce and leapfrogged through the hills, starting new flare-ups that threatened subdivisions in Canyon Country and surrounding areas.

Firefighters were battling the blaze along a 15- to 20-mile fire line. The fire had burned 10,000 acres by evening with no containment in sight. Winds near the fire lines were whipping up to 80 mph, and officials predicted they could intensify overnight. The blaze moved so quickly that fire officials had to relocate their command center five times to keep up with the advancing flames.

10. The comment referred to the hubris of building
a fairy castle in an area so given to the California cycle of Fire/rain/earthquakes/mudslides...I found the photo itself poinaint...Your conclusion that I am in fact "hateful" is bad enough-in point of fact before I posted I had read that no one had in fact "burned" and that your assumption that I believed someone had either done so deserved to do so says tons more about you than it ever could about me. But thanks for the thought...

Do I NEED a sarcasm smiley???

2. "PRINCESS LILLY'S CASTLE" Is just one Malibu Landmark
that burned down this morning. She was into helping charities, therefore, they held "events" there. The "CASTLE" was fun to see when we drove up the coast. Will miss seeing it. At least no human was hurt... yet...in Malibu.
Fire is still raging and the winds haven't calmed down... don't expect them to until Tuesday or Wednesday.. then have to contend with the heat (90's)and single digit humidity from the Santa Ana Winds. So far nine fires in this area and they don't seem to be stoppable as yet.

3. I'm in Altadena,
just walking distance from Eaton Canyon (at the San Gabriel mountains). Thankfully we're not getting the winds up here and I'm praying it stays that way.

I'm watching the coverage now and it doesn't look good right now for Canyon Country & Orange County.

The Gov. just declared a state of emergency.

5. HOPE YOU STAY SAFE!
Too many fires already. Have friends in Altadena and they say it is really dry there and the last two rain just added to the growth. Good Luck, ariesgem!

6. I'll miss seeing it too
I just can't believe it could burn to the ground like that. It'll be sad driving that way and seeing nothing there. :-(

Castle Kashan is the only Castle in Malibu and is the home of Lilly Lawrence, world renowned beauty and Malibu philanthropist. With a heart bigger than her Castle, she carries on her family's tradition of helping the underprivileged. Her charity work extends towards the Arts and Children.

Malibu's fairytale Castle that sits high on the hill overlooking the Malibu lagoon, heralds one of California's most spectacular ocean views, from every Lancet, Barbican, Quadrangle and Yett of the Palace.

Residents at Kashan Court consists of Security personnel, Housekeepers, Groundskeepers and a flow of continuous guests and friends celebrating life in Malibu....>

8.  I play in a band that rehearses in Agua Dulce.
As a matter of fact, my wife and I left after rehearsal about 6 pm today and avoided the serious stuff (We live over in Norwalk).

When we got home, I called the drummer and he said they were OK- the fire went to the west of them.

Terrible, just terrible. Fire everywhere.
