Vermont senator opposes Mukasey over civil liberties
Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Sen. Bernie Sanders said Monday he will vote against confirming Michael B. Mukasey, President Bush's nominee for attorney general.

The former federal judge, Sanders said, would not adequately protect people's civil liberties.

"We need an attorney general who does not believe the president has unlimited power," Sanders, I-Vt., said in a statement. "We need an attorney general who understands that torture is not what this country is about, and we need an attorney general who clearly understands the separation of powers inherent in our Constitution."

"Unfortunately," Sanders added, "it is clear that Mr. Mukasey is not that person."
(snip)

The panel is likely to vote next month on whether to send Mukasey's nomination to the full Senate. Vote-counters in both parties have said he is likely to garner little if any opposition.

4. Why not a hold?
Any Senator can hold a nomination. What good is one vote if all the Democrats cave on this?

5. You are quite right about that.
It is appalling to see OUR RIGHTS as a subject matter in questioning a prospective AG and equally appalling to have those in government not up in arms over those said rights being violated. Are the republicons so powerfull that the dems cower and hide when it comes to speaking out about the blatent violations that are typical of this administration and the republicon party in general? Not for one of them anyway. Maybe, just maybe, it would never have gone this far if the dems in office were doing their jobs properly. Many were swayed and deceived by the republicons. I don't care if it's a question of the US being under attack be it 9-11 or even if it were as extreme as a nuclear explosion on a US city because when they take away our rights, that nukes the whole country. Who is the bigger enemy? The answer is the one that does the most damage.
Yea, that someone has the guts and patriotism to speak up about such brazen incompetence when it comes to the foundation of our country and shame on the rest for keeping quiet.

6. It doesn't matter
confirm Mukasey, you get someone who isn't fit. Don't confirm him and you retain someone who isn't fit- and is a high ranking member of the BFEE.

16. jg, that's called magical thinking.
There's absolutely zero guarantee that impeachment will do anything to stop anything that bushco's doing.

18. No, it's based on evidence
Read the history of the last two impeachment processes. On both occasions, the president was reigned in -- particularly on his foreign policy -- while the investigations were going on.

Furthermore, this is not about absolute guarantees. This is about doing what's right AND doing what is most likely to succeed. The evidence of HC&Ms is there and we all know it.

It's also about doing what is politically the right move. In nine out of nine presidential impeachment attempts, the party that brought the charges either held or increased their majority in the next election. They also re-took the White House in the next presidential election, nine out of nine times.

What is your evidence that this time will be different?

17. Can Sanders filibuster Mukasey if he comes to the floor for a vote of confirmation?
Or is the filibuster only for bills being voted upon?
