Dirksen hit again by fire

A fire was reported in the women’s restroom of the Dirksen Senate Office Building early Friday, following an Oct. 31 fire that forced evacuations.

The fire was extinguished immediately and there were no evacuations, United States Capitol Police (USCP) spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said, adding that USCP are investigating the incident.

A Halloween fire just two days ago forced hundreds of Hill staffers to evacuate from the Hart and Dirksen Senate office buildings. No one was injured in that blaze, which was reported shortly after 1 p.m. in the Hart basement.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief Phillip Morse said it was unclear whether the Halloween fire was set intentionally. Police are still looking into how it started and whether it was connected to Oct. 3 fires in the Dirksen and Hart buildings. In that incident, four separate, small trash-can fires were reported in the Dirksen and Hart Senate office buildings. Three of those were found in women’s restrooms, which led Schneider to describe them as “suspicious” at the time.
