White House Edits ABC News Then Takes it Back
Source: ABC News

ABC News' Jonathan Karl Reports: News flash -- The White House has selectively edited a report on Iraq, taking out negative information and distorting the report's meaning.

This isn't about intelligence or weapons of mass destruction. It's my report on Thursday's evening on World News with Charles Gibson.

The report noted "violence in Iraq is down and down considerably" in virtually every category, but my report also noted that "there has been almost no political progress on the national level" and that "U.S. officials know military gains won't mean much if the Iraqi government doesn't get its act together."

The White House sent out an edited version of my report in an official White House publication called "White House Iraq Update."

-----

As edited by the White House, my report looked like an unqualified declaration of success in Iraq. The White House e-mail publication is headlined: "In Case You Missed It: "Violence Is Down in Iraq and Down Considerably."

1. Keep catchin' 'em at it, and keep 'em apologizing and backpedaling. Eventually we'll break these
bastards of their bad habits, whether or not we can send the war criminals to the Hague.

4. This is silly, they set up the interviews expecting them to be edited
All the favorable stuff is always lumped together in the beginning and any unfavorable stuff is always thrown in at the tail end to be edited out or ignored.

What is different here is that someone complained about the usual WH editing cuts. And that someone made his complaints public.

27. Then it's WAY PASTTIME for people to complain about
"the usual WH editing cuts.". . They should never have been allowed to get away with it. If this is, indeed SOP. . it is born of bad habit and lazy "journalism"!

5. Just standard procedure for this Potemkin pResidency.
Except for the "getting called on it" part. That's a nice twist, IMHO,
and something I'd enjoy seeing more of.

White House Edits ABC News Then Takes it Back

November 02, 2007 12:21 PM

ABC News' Jonathan Karl Reports: News flash -- The White House has selectively edited a report on Iraq, taking out negative information and distorting the report's meaning.

....

Here is what the White House left out (of Jonathan Karl's report):

O'HANLON: ... and it doesn't answer the questions about political progress.

KARL: In fact, there's been almost no political progress on the national level, and U.S. officials know military gains won't mean much if the Iraqi government doesn't get its act together, which is one reason the Pentagon doesn't even want to use the word "winning."

You're not ready to say we're winning, that the surge is working --

ROBERT GATES : (From tape.) I think – I think that those end up being loaded words. I think we have been very successful. We need to continue being successful.

KARL: Today, Defense Secretary Gates said that the reduction in violence would not have been possible without the surge of 30,000 additional troops into Iraq, but, Charlie, those troops are going home in the coming months, raising the question of whether the violence will go up when they leave.

GIBSON: Jonathan Karl tonight reporting from the Pentagon, thanks.

After ABC News expressed concern about the selective editing of the report, White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe acknowledged it was inappropriate and agreed to sent out the full text of the ABC report.

"The White House understands your concern and the full text of your report will be released to the same distribution list so that recipients have a chance to see what the entire report was about."

How will Little Miss Spinderella explain this one?

The so-called "Liberal Media" is yet another propaganda storm foisted on the American people by a radically malignant GOP, currently headed by The Prevaricator In Chief.

Truth is like sunrise to these vampires.

9. meh... just more fair&balanced cherry-picking for the insiders
 It's not like they censored Mr. Karl, they just selectively quoted his report to the recipients of their house organ in a way that emphasized their preferred angle on the story.

"Iraq Update is put together by the National Security Council and distributed by the White House via email to government officials, Congressional staffers, radio & television talk show hosts, journalists and foreign policy experts."

They're just shining on the koolaid drinkers.

Compared to Amazing Bullshit like the fake FEMA news conference, this is small potatoes in a teapot. The most surprising detail is that anyone in the press bothered to call them on it.

33. I wonder how much of this
is being absorbed by the majority of American people - or if it's even being reported to the majority of the people? Is it being viewed as acceptable or too small an infraction to care? 10 years ago a fake news conference would have ruffled more than a few feathers.

11. Isn't this a violation of copyright? If Fox can go after candidates over debate footage
why can't ABC News crack down on this? This is taking work product, employing it for the use of the government without paying for the privilege, and on top of that, editing it to distort the content, without the permission of the copyright holder!

How is that legal?

These neo-cons are claiming victory--again. No mind that October is Ramadan. Still very, very bloody for a holy month, don't you think?

24. How does that make you feel, Mr. Karl and ABC News?
Do you feel kind of used? Does it make you angry? Isn't it nice that you have a national broadcast platform to get your version of events out there in response to such duplicity?

I wonder where ABC was when certain groups were selectively reporting on Democratic nominees, candidates and office-holders? Having a good chuckle at the expense of John Kerry, Howard Dean, Paul Wellstone's surviving family and a host of others? Now you have an inkling of what it's like to be misused by the Mighty Republican Wurlitzer. But as I say, you have the advantage of a broadcast network to get your side of things out. Will you have any sort of understanding for the next victim of Republican spin? Will you provide that victim with a platform to respond?
