Bolivian president says rich nations must pay for damage to third world

The Associated Press
Friday, November 2, 2007

LA PAZ, Bolivia: The world's richest nations must be made to pay for the damage their profligate use of natural resources has caused in Bolivia and other developing countries, President Evo Morales said Friday.

"It's not possible that some in the industrialized world live very well economically while affecting, destroying others," he told The Associated Press in an interview.

The first indigenous president of this country — which scientists say is already among those most profoundly affected by global warming — said he and other Latin American leaders were exploring possible legal steps for demanding compensation for the developed world's "ecological debt."

"If there is understanding, that would be great," he said. "But if not, there will have to be legal responsibility internationally."

The 48-year-old former coca union leader reiterated his call for the United States, which he accuses of trying to undermine his government, to pull all of its soldiers out of this Andean nation. The U.S. Embassy would not say how many troops or military contractors it has in Bolivia but they are believed to not exceed a few dozen.

1. Good Luck With That!
I'd be happy just to get the US and the Multicorporate pirates out of my country so they stop messing with my economy, community, and government (and yes, I AM in the US!)

3. So many major injustices for the West to redress, not least at home,

2. Must be India, Canada, and China.
Their economies are producing massive surpluses right now.

Last I looked, the US is just a teensy bit in debt.

We are not rich. I must be missing something big.

6. If you think the US is not rich...
You have a very distorted view of rich-poor.

Sorry, but if you truly knew how the vast majority of people in the world live, you would never, ever say that.

7. This isn't about the current GDP performance,
it's about how the U.S. stunted the economic and life of the rest of the Earth, in concert w/ Western Europe, after we bombed them.

5. He has a point.
The scientific consensus proves that the United States, and to a lesser degree, Western Europe, are largely responsible for global climate change.
The United States should begin thinking about setting up a global compensation fund.
