RIYADH — Saudi Arabia amputated the hand of a thief on Monday, carrying out a rarely implemented Islamic punishment amid warnings in the media of a rise in crime in the conservative kingdom.

The right hand of Amr Nasr, an Egyptian man, was removed in Mecca after he was found guilty of pick-pocketing inside the Grand Mosque compound, the official Saudi Press Agency.

When it comes to cutting off the offending part, methinks that punishment would hurt a little...

31. What was sexual about HT's post?
Mega a-sexual w/ extreme prejudice by the religious police, given the power to arrest and imprison by petro-dollars.
If someone's trying to masturbate and the religious police kick in the door and drag you outside in front of your neighbors and chop-off all your naughty bits, well, that's a pretty strong statement about that type of Government.

43. Freeze! Word Usage Police!

Drop the "methinks" and save it for the Renaissance Faire. Subject should be aware that it's usage can be used against him/her as evidence in the court of public opinion in support of the contention that subject is an overweight techie with socialization/maturity issues.

12. Probably not, sadly, and castration is as bad as the death penalty
In sex crimes, sex is just the weapon used. THey did a study a few years back on offenders who were "chemically castrated" -- chemically altered so that there could be no hormonal drive to molest -- and it turned out they had the same urges and same recidivism.

Plus, castration is like the death penalty: if we make a mistake, we can't take it back.

Needless to say, Saudi Arabia has a brutal regime in power. Islamic law is harsh...they've executed gay people in Saudi Arabia. I guess some people would think that's hilarious, also.

How can we honestly still have diplomatic realtions with SA with this shit still going on? Now we're all entitled to our tribal and hereditary superstitions and/or religions, but that entitlement ought to end at the end of another's nose.

I have read that it is illegal to possess a copy of the Wilhelm Tell score or a recording thereof in Saudi Arabia. I reckon the Swiss peasants rising up against the Austrian nobles is a bit too close to home for them. Probably have a hissy fit when the French national anthem is played on state visits from the French to S.A. The French ought to sing it in Arabic every morning when they raise their flag at the embassy!

If you compare the media coverage of our mass media about these two countries, you could easily be convinced of that.

Or am I not correct?

which is locking up somebody in a ghastly hellhole for a couple of decades where they are given no dignity, no education, nothing but exposure to violence and intimidation.

Would you rather lose your hand or spend 10 years in an American prison?

35. S-Arabia is a prime example for the non-existing correlation betw. civilizing and technical advances
If a nation has a high tech industry, it doesn't mean that it has evolved spiritually.
Sometimes the opposite is true. It was true in Nazi-Germany and nowadays it is
obviously true in Saudi Arabia and other states with advanced technical abilities:

http://www.thecityreview.com/sky3.html

The regime in Saudi Arabia is one of the most murderous on this planet. And, of course,
it is a major partner of the so so-called global business elite, which in itself is
heartless and inhuman.
