Romney Lands Big Endorsement
Source: The New York Times

Mitt Romney has landed a much-coveted endorsement from the social conservative world: Paul Weyrich, chairman of the Free Congress Foundation and one of the founders back in the day of the Moral Majority.

Mr. Weyrich, who has been described as the father of the religious right and also founded the Heritage Foundation, had been critical of talk that broke out earlier this year among Christian conservatives about bolting the Republican Party if Rudolph W. Giuliani, a supporter of abortion rights, is the nominee and backing a third-party candidate.

So now it appears he is backing up that criticism with action, lining up behind Mr. Romney, despite questions many Christian conservatives continue to harbor about his relatively recent conversation from supporter of abortion rights to opponent and his Mormon faith.

Mr. Weyrich did pen an article recently about the conditions under which the creation of a third party might work, but he labeled the discussion about it at this stage as “foolish” during in an interview with The New York Times recently. He has vigorously advocated that conservatives unite behind a single candidate, rather than diluting their impact by splitting up their support across several people.

2. Multiple Choice Mitt is sufficiently repented
to garner this round of endorsement from the all-but-irrelevant fossil Weyrich. Yippee.

5. But a nutbag that other nutbags follow blindly
It will be an uptick, but not always enough to win it all.

7. Agree with you, ruggerson -- this is a very big breakthrough endorsement
for Willard.

Money can't buy love, according to the Beatles, but it appears to be buoying Romney's presidential campaign very nicely.

Here and there in the media comes fresh updates that he's leading the GOP pack in Iowa and New Hampshire and within closing distance of the lead in South Carolina.

The Weyrich endorsement likely comes with a fat Rollodex of right-wing donors.

14. Mittens doesn't know Jesus Christ as his personal savior!!
He thinks Mary wasn't a virgin and God knows whatever doctrines the fundies find so much nuttier than their own nuttiness.....he's got a BIG fat Mormon Problem with the "Religious Right" which I think is amusing poetic justice.

9. This is a big get for Mittens. Now he and Rudy are gonna be duking it out for real.
It's narrowing to a two-man race on that side--Mittens in the early states, Rudy in CA, FL, and NY/NJ.

with an endorsement like this, we might have to worry about a Romney/ Huckabee ticket. Earlier that twit from, I think, Bob Jones found Mitt "I talk about of both sides of my mouth and blow it out my ass all at the same time" Romney "acceptable. Now Weyreich. Add that to Huckabee, a former Baptists minister, and the Republican base is back in the game. Add that to Hillary running as the Dem. nominee, and the Republican base goes ballistic. While that ticket will never win ( and barring some "unforseen" event - Iran - or some super fuckup by the Dems - which is pretty synonymous with Dems - we will have a Democratic president, House and Senate in 2008) it is going to provide enough Republican base - added to our own base that isn't really too wild for Hillary and frankly, I'll vote Dem pretty much no matter what - but won't work for her) that Republican ticket vs. "Inevitable Hillary" will save some Senate seats and some House seats. Honestly, I think that that ticket is the only thing that will save the Republicans from 1964. Actually, I think that that is also the reason they want Hillary. Without that combination, the Republican Party could seriously implode. Well, here's hoping.

edit to ad:
ps. not anti-Hillary. She's obviously not my choice, but take out the Romney/ R.W. Religious combo base and they are screwed. Guiliani is their worst case scenario

19. They're willing to sell all of their values down the river to "beat Hillary"
Even if it means supporting a pro-abortion liberal (if we are to believe his own words from the past) who isn't even a real Christian.
