Man charged in theft of 220 campaign signs
Source: Newsday

A man whose pick-up truck was stacked with 220 political signs from a variety of Democratic candidates was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with possession of stolen property, Nassau County police said.

Peter Guardino, 20, of North Massapequa, was given a desk appearance and released after being charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, police said.

Two plainclothes officers saw the pick-up, with its headlights off, drive into a fast-food parking lot on Old Country Road in Plainview about 4:05 a.m., police said.

6. Who paid him to do this?
I can see a vandal taking down a sign or two in his neighborhood, but to get up that early (or stay up that late) shows a level of determination that's odd, unless he's getting paid.

The Republicans love to hire un/under employed right wing youth to do their dirty work. Is this another such instance?

8. Yes, and it is going on across the nation, I have no doubt
A couple days before the 2004 election, I was at the home of some freidns who had yard signs.

"I think the Bushies are out stealing signs tonight," my friend said.

We all laughed, but didn't up from the table to stake out the front lawn.

Minutes later, their signs were gone, too. My friends, who saw them drive of, said it was a coordinated operation, with a spotter (who they saw leaping back into the car along with the thief) a sign thief, and a driver.

Later, I heard the local College We-Are-Scared-Shitless-to-Join-The-Military at the local intsitution were paying $1/a sign.

Bet they still have the reimbursement receipts from the RNC.

17. THAT should be the headline
"Man with links to Republican candidate steals Democratic election signs."

Of course, it says right there in the article that this guy "definitely" didn't work for the campaign. Must be an independent contractor.

That Belesi really, really should be charged. Give the boy immunity to testify against him.

22. You decide....
The Nassau County Democratic Committee described Guardino as a known operative of Republican Joseph Belesi, a retired police sergeant in a tight race with incumbent Legis. David Mejias (D-Farmingdale) in eastern Nassau's 14th District. Belesi said Tuesday night that Guardino "definitely" did not work for his campaign.

11. He needs to be charged with rigging an election or something Federal.
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 09:50 AM by slampoet
This sign stealing has got to stop. it is obviously done by people who are hired to do this by GOP campaigns.

Maybe a warrant to look into his bank account might be in order.

But of course the cops are glad to just charge him with the only crime they can see. If they had caught him with drugs they'd investigate but if he's out there trying to rig elections the cops just don't want to look into it further.

than just possession of stolen property, this threatens freedom of speech as well and it's totally Un-american. With the hundreds of thousands of Americans having given their lives and limbs to defend our Constitution, I find this repugnant. I believe it was Patrick Henry (although I'm not sure it was him) that said "I may disagree with your opinion but I will defend to the death your right to say it" or something like that.

Thanks for the thread, Magic Rat.

20. Sounds like a typical right wing arsehole to me.
I can see lots of them going out of their way to do that without reimbursement from the RNC.

They just don't believe in fair elections.

21. I hate this crap
I am fed up with these idiotic antics from the little hacklings on both sides of the partisan divide. There's a guy who lives a block over from me, and who currently works for one of the major Democratic presidential campaigns, who does this sort of thing before every primary. Since he's usually for the annointed favorite, and I'm usually for the reformer, I inevitably find a sign or two missing every September.

23. If he picked them up off public property... wasn't he helping the city?
I see people picking trash up along the freeway all the time and that's not illegal. I'm just noting that it depends where he got them.... was he picking up trash or stealing them from private parties?
