Democrats gain three Republican State Senate seats

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Democrats won three Republican state Senate seats today and need one more victory in two very close northern Virginia contests to claim a Senate majority.

In one of the most expensive and hotly contested races of the year, Republican Senator Jeannemarie Devolites Davis lost to Democratic former Delegate Chap Petersen in Fairfax County.

In south Hampton Roads, neurosurgeon Ralph Northam won 54 percent to defeat Senator Nick Rerras of Norfolk.

On the Peninsula, Democrat John Miller also defeated Republican anti-tax activist Tricia Stall. But to control of the Senate for the first time in 12 years, the Democrats would have to win one of two races that are within a margin of 2 percentage points.
