Poland's Walesa to undergo heart transplant
Wed Nov 7, 2007 8:03am EST

GDANSK, Poland (Reuters) - Former Polish President
and Solidarity movement leader Lech Walesa said on
Wednesday he planned to have a heart transplant in
the United States.

Walesa, a symbol of the overthrow of the communist
regime in Eastern Europe in 1989 and a winner of the
Nobel Peace Prize, said his health was worsening and
he could die without a transplant.

"I had very bad medical test results last month and
quick actions had to be undertaken," Walesa, 64,
told reporters in the northern port city of Gdansk,
the cradle of Solidarity which helped to trigger the
fall of communism.

He said he was not afraid of the surgery, which
would be conducted at a centre in the city of Houston,
because he feared only "God, and my wife a little bit."

1. Wow.
Wow.

I don't know why I always had a view of that guy as indestructible.

We all get old, and sick, I guess. Eventually.

2. US healthcare
I see he is coming to the US for healthcare. He must have made alot of money while pres of poland because americans can no longer afford healthcare. This is the system Republicans want! millionaires treated and middle class left to die in the street.

3. Why we can't get universal health care
Every time someone from a foreign country comes here for medical care, it reinforces the idea that we should not make our health care system like those in other countries. I wish Walesa well, but he should have gotten his transplant in Poland.

5. I don't know anything about heart transplants in Poland...
but I do know that England in particular is very advanced. So it isn't like the US is the only place to go.
