U.S. Transportation Secretary Peters Announces Broad New Effort to Reduce Motorcycle Fatalities
Source: Press release

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- To combat the alarming trend of rising motorcycle injuries and fatalities, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary E. Peters today announced a comprehensive new federal initiative to improve motorcycle safety with more rider education and training, tougher standards for helmet certification labeling, law enforcement training, and road designs that consider motorcycle dynamics.

Secretary Peters – an avid motorcyclist – also released a television public service announcement where she credits her riding gear for saving her life during a 2005 motorcycle crash.

1. Problem is not so much with cyclists, but cagers
Germany has introduced a big project to educate drivers about motorcyclists, this was never a problem over here before, but I heard there was huge increase in fatalities here 2007.

I was in an accident in 2003, thank god I was wearing a full-face helmet or my face would have needed reconstructive surgery.

2. You'll have to make it mandatory
- or only the already safe, concerned drivers will be taking the course. It's the t-shirt wearing yahoos with the rockets beneath 'em are the ones who need the guidance, and they ain't listenin'.

6. And they give the rest of us responsible riders a bad name.
I'm sick of these morons, and the stupid broads riding on the back with their ass sticking out in the wind. They are a big part of the reason that insurance for a motorcycle is as high as it is. Oh and least we forget, the "bad-ass" wheel-standers who've probably been busted for reckless op so many times, they can't carry insurance. Pathetic.

Florida Motorcycle Deaths Soar After Helmet Law Repeal

August 8, 2005

Motorcyclist deaths in Florida have rapidly increased since Gov. Jeb Bush signed a law in 2000 repealing the state's mandatory motorcycle helmet law.

The number of fatal motorcycle accidents increased more than 81 percent in the three years after the repeal took effect according to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

.....

Deaths among Florida riders 21 and under nearly tripled after 2000. Riders younger than 21 are still required by state law to wear helmets.

''The numbers are pretty compelling that Florida has paid a high price,'' said Rae Tyson, a spokesman for the federal agency. ``There is enough here for any state contemplating a repeal to realize there are serious consequences.''

While the report suggests that some of the increase in motorcycle deaths can be attributed to increased ridership in the state, critics of the Florida helmet law repeal point out that the non-helmeted fatality rate per 10,000 registered motorcyclists increased from 0.7 fatalities in 1998 to 6.1 in 2002.

Medical costs for motorcycle riders involved in accidents in Florida followed the increase in fatalities. In 1998 and 1999, the acute care hospital charges for head-brain-skull principal injury cases per 10,000 registered motorcycles were $311,549 and $428,347 respectively.

The comparable figures for 2001 and 2002 were $605,854 and $610,386, adjusted for inflation.

.....

When will the adults be back in charge?

Time is running out.

11. while it is easy to lay
that at the feet of another Bush, the door was opened for the repeal of helmet laws back in 1995 when Congress lifted federal sanctions against states that did not have helmet requirements and since then helmets laws, in response to their electorates, have been repealed or amended by the various state's legislators.

Currently 4 states have no helmet laws, 20 require helmets for all riders, 19 states do not require helmets for riders over 18 and 7 states do not require helmets for riders over the age of 21.

The forces arguing for and against helmets are quite vociferous and far more eloquent than I am and you can find multiple sites across the web for both sides.

12. It's called the "right-to-die" bill in Florida.
Here's an article from the St. Pete Times, just before Jeb revoked the helmet law in 2000. At the time, Florida was one of 23 states that still required wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle.

Riding without a helmet?

These devastating injuries have ramifications far beyond the rider, as this article discusses.

Seat belts are mandatory in cars/trucks. Motorcycle helmets should be, IMHO.

The brain is not a forgiving organ.

10. illegal sham helmets...........
I've seen so many that wouldn't even hold a spoon full of brains in that despite being illegal are sold nationwide at various venues. The unfortunate part of motorcycles is that the inexperienced person is usually the victim. The sale and manufacture of m/c's, part, accessories, and fashions is big business. The effort to cash in on the big bucks puts all the training & safety issues aside. The Feds may feel the need but most of this rests with local & state enforcement.
