Bush wants to ease burden of wounded veterans
Source: San Antonio Express News

After praising the world-class care that maimed and disfigured veterans are getting at the Center for the Intrepid at Fort Sam Houston, President Bush defended the war in Iraq at a gathering of Republican supporters and predicted Thursday that history will bear him out.

"Some day people are going to look back at this time and day and say, 'Thank God there was a generation that did not lose faith ... because the Middle East is a place free of suiciders,'" Bush said.

Appearing at a private fundraiser for Sen. John Cornyn at the Terrell Hills home of John Steen, Bush delivered what one participant called a stirring defense of his presidency — including his decision to launch the Iraq war.

Bush, whose comments were heard through an attendee's cell phone, spoke of the gravity of his decision to go to war and the principles that guide him at a time when his popularity has taken a beating.

1. asked not to be identified because he wasn't authorized to speak to reporters.
"You can't make profound decisions for America unless you are certain in your soul," said Bush, who made his fourth trip to San Antonio since 2001. "The decisions I have made will make it easier for your grandchildren to live in peace."

Describing the war as a battle between "light and dark," Bush said, "If you kill people to achieve a political objective or to advance an ideology ... you are nothing but evil. The only way they can convince people to kill the innocent is if they find hopelessness and despair."

"It was a stem-winder of a speech," said one participant, who asked not to be identified because he wasn't authorized to speak to reporters. "He was very enthusiastic and he talked from the heart."

The Cornyn event and a luncheon earlier in Houston raised a total of $1.3 million, a Cornyn spokesman said.

Earlier Thursday at Fort Sam Houston, Bush wrapped his coat around a severely wounded veteran for a photograph and praised the treatment that U.S. soldiers are getting at the state-of-the-art Center for the Intrepid.

5. "The decisions I have made will make it easier for your grandchildren to live in peace."
Like hell they will. I look at my 7 mos. old grandchild and wonder what the world will be like for him as he grows up in a world riddled with debt, a world which has gotten a new plastering of hate and war mentality all thanks to the bush-war-idealizer-family, a world where education is hardly attenable for the middle class anymore, and a world where creativity, arts, and the humanity seem to have been sent on their way to some hell hole far and away from anyone's reach, a world where the oxygen has been snuffed out of creativity ... a world where 12 year old kids sit in the shadow of a tent in a book fair to listen to the author of a book about WAR, WAR, WAR, AND MORE WAR ... what hope is there for these children, for my grandchild? and in the meantime bush surrounds himself in a palace, the people's house which is no longer the people's house, draining our blood, draining our national treasury, draining our souls, draining each of us out of a peaceful existence ... Too bad bush won't face any of us who are reality based and who would like to tell him a thing or two in the name of those he has already killed and in the name of those who will go on to kill ... it is just too bad.

20. the cognitive dissonance is stunning
<Describing the war as a battle between "light and dark," Bush said, "If you kill people to achieve a political objective or to advance an ideology ... you are nothing but evil. The only way they can convince people to kill the innocent is if they find hopelessness and despair.">

#1. this "light & dark" manichean crap is full-on medeival, has GOT to stop.

#2. he is killing "people to achieve a political objective" - a cooperative, compliant, oil-rich arab state, & "advance an ideology" - democracy.

which is scarier: he doesn't understand the irony, or he does, and he doesn't give a fuck?

8. Amen to that ...
Not to sound like any kind of "end times" nut, but anyone that thinks the next 40 years will be anything like the last 40 is insane.

A "future"? Between what's happening with the economy, the environment and this nations rapid slide into fascism, the wars that will be fought for dwindling resources as the population continues to explode, I truly believe that as a species we'll be extinct before any of bush's predictions come to pass. Hell, bush said it himself when asked by a reporter several years ago about the future and his legacy, "Who cares? We'll all be dead."

Personally, I think the Mayans may have had it right, December 21, 2012.

10. "spoke of the gravity of his decision to go to war "
Ain't gravity one of them there 'theories?' :sarcasm:

If there were truly justice in the universe, gravity would cease under Bush and he would fly off into space.

11. Bush's legacy with veterans = rats in Walter Reed.
I was writing letters to the paper years ago about the cuts to VA funding.

But it takes rats in Walter Reed to get anybody to wake up.

19. What an utterly ridiculous thing to say.
"Suicider" is not even a word. The only person on the planet who uses it is him. Idiot is right.
