Neo-Nazis Clash With Prague Protesters
Source: CBS News

Neo-Nazis trying to march through the Jewish quarter of Prague on Saturday clashed with self-proclaimed anti-fascists, and at least 80 people were arrested in outbreaks of violence around the capital.

Police also seized weapons including a gas gun, axes and sticks at scattered sites as the extremists tried to reach the Jewish quarter, police spokesman Ladislav Bernasek said.

<snip>

The march had been scheduled to take place just a day after the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the 1938 night of terror when the Nazis attacked synagogues and Jewish homes and businesses throughout Germany and parts of Austria.

<snip>

Hundreds of Jews and others gathered in the historic Jewish quarter to commemorate the Nazi pogrom, protest the march and be ready, if it went ahead, to prevent it from going through the Jewish quarter.

2. Unlikely that will happen
The Sudetenland thing, that is. In 1945 3 million Germans were expelled from Czechoslovakia under the so-called "Benes Decrees". There is little ethnic German presence in the country these days. Unfortunately, neo-Nazi troglodytes seem to be everywhere.

3. Yes, even the American branch is capable of turning up anywhere. They
came to Omaha, NE to protest illegals. It was on the Saturday of the first game of the season. No one even knew it happened until they saw the news. My point being, they're here, they're there, they're everywhere...

4. Neo-Nazi march in Prague fails as protestors rally (AFP)
PRAGUE (AFP) — Brandishing yellow stars and red flags, more than a 1,000 people rallied in Prague's old Jewish quarter Saturday to block a far-right march on the anniversary of a notorious Nazi-era pogrom against Jews ... "I came because I don't like these idiots with their shaved heads," said one 17-year-old teenager, who identified herself as Vera, a star sewn on her coat ... http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5hJMWn8gLRyfChyHQ62NKLrzQ233Q

Czech anti-fascists block Nazi march (Haaretz)
By Yehuda Lahav

A large group of Czech anti-fascist activists prevented hundreds of neo-Nazis from marching in Prague yesterday on the anniversary of Kristallnacht ... The 2,000 members of the group .. positioned themselves at the outskirts of the capital's historic Jewish quarter, where they warded off some 400 Czech and German neo-Nazis ... Police arrested over 40 neo-Nazis. Law enforcement sources said some of them carried weapons such as iron rods and even explosives. Police also sealed off a number of subway stations to prevent neo-Nazis from reaching the quarter ... http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/922552.html

5. All over Europe, anarchist groups and squats are targeted and removed
Norway, Denmark, Germany, Poland, France and UK, as far as I know. It's the 'natural opposition' to nazism, being dissolved.

6. There's still lots of "natuaral opposition" to Nazism though
Look all through the postwar era with groups like Red Action and Anti-Fascist Action etc. While I don't agree with the anarchists on pretty much anything, I'm glad they're out there confronting the racists.

7. It was an unusual experience
Prague officials have been criticized (justifiably so) that they allow right-wing demonstrations but refuse left-wing ones. Apparently the neo-nazi march was initially banned, then the decision was reversed, only to be ultimately banned again. This is what I was told although they tried to go one with the protest anyway. There were many Germans and Hungarians who came into the city as well. When I found the anti-fascist group gathering in Stare Mestska Namesti (Old Town Square) there had already been riots around the T-mobile stadium in Ceskamoravska and Vysocany. The riot police blocked off the streets towards Josefov and then repeatedly charged the anti-fascists (who were largely Czech anarchists with a sizable group of German anarchists) I was separated from my friends and found myself walking into a group of skinheads. I am not sure what they said (my Czech is still not particularly good but I am half Asian so my features give away my non-slavic ethnicity) but they chased me through these impossibly windy streets. I eventually lost them with only a few minor cuts and bruises. I found the anarchists again only to have to start running when we were charged by police horses. Saw quite a few people go down when hit by the riot police. I understand that the police were trying to keep the two groups apart but I think they used way more force than was necessary considering that the anti-fascists did not provoke them initially.
