Rich urged to bear climate change costs
Source: Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - The rich caused the problem and must therefore pay the price of fixing the global climate change crisis, a new report said on Monday.

Christian Aid, an agency of British and Irish churches, said industrialised nations were historically responsible and therefore morally liable to foot the multi-billion dollar cost of tackling the problem of man-made emissions of carbon gases.

"Nations that have grown rich in part by polluting without facing the costs of doing so must now repay their carbon debt to the developing world," said Andrew Pendleton, author of "Truly Inconvenient - tackling poverty and climate change at once".

<snip>

Based on the Greenhouse Development Rights framework -- an equation allocating responsibility for emissions of greenhouse gases -- the United States should shoulder 34.3 percent of the annual bill, with the European Union on 26.6 percent.

3. The Rich Won't Have Any Bottom Line If They Don't
There is only one world, and they messed it up. They cannot escape the consequences any more than the poorest Bangladeshi. It may take a little longer, but there is a tipping point at which it all goes to pot, and it may be too late anyway.

But yeah, like they give a care.

10. You are "the rich"
You come from the country with the highest GDP in the world, and one of the highest per capita. Your profile lists hobbies - anyone with hobbies in the US is rich compared to most of the world. 99% of us posting on DU are "the rich", in global terms.

17. THANK-YOU!
If you've eaten today and you have the food or cash on hand for another meal you're rich. If you have on clothes and you have another set of clothes that are clean and ready to wear you're rich. You have electricity all the time? Brother, you're rich. You have a roof and four walls? yep, rich. Do you manage to eke out a living on more than $2.00 a day? Then by the world's standards you're ahead of the game.
WE are the wealthy on the planet. And that's why we need to reassess the way we eat and what we eat, what we wear and what it's made of how we get around, our entire consumerism habits. We're outta control. And it really hasta change. We're not an only child.

7. K&R this. Also, I think it is about time they start putting a energy usage
tax on like, Hummers that use up all kinds of fuel, private jets, big consumers and I know that Al would be ok working out something fair in this regard and probably already takes care of his usage by buying carbon credits. Also, the Caddy Escalade. These vehicle run you over in your little hybrids where you are trying to help the environment and trying to conserve fuel.

It is time the rich pay their part.

No doubt they should bear the brunt of the cost to repair the damage for which they are responsible.

9. Why can't the smokers pay more to help?
I think everyone should pay more for gas taxes, but smokers should pony up a little more since they're polluting the environment/littering/starting fires with their habit.
If anyone is 'morally responsible' to pay compensation for damaging the earth, it's smokers in the West.

13. no thanx

"smokers should pony up a little more since they're polluting the environment/littering/starting fires with their habit"

Pony up a little more? I'm already paying over 5 bucks a pack on that 1.50 pack of smokes. If such taxes were levied on beer, your name would be brokeboy. Sure, I'm polluting the environment when I smoke but I could smoke 5 packs a day for life and never come close to generating the same amount of pollution as just one car fire. Ya know, the car fire created when some drunk smashes his car into my family's car? I dont litter, but quite frankly I'd much rather see a cigarette butt on the side of the road than a beer bottle. The former tells me someone is not overly concerned with their health and has a littering problem. The latter tells me someone out there is drunk and looking to kill me.

If one looks at it from Gregorian's perspective (poster below) and then from yours they almost cancel each other out. After all, the smokers are killing themselves and there by reducing the population and the added load on the planet.

How's that for a convolution of logic?

11. But since it's as much a population problem, shouldn't people with kids pay?
After all, they're bringing people into the world who are going to create more climate change. Unless they're going to be hunter gatherers, which I seriously doubt. In a modern world, the problem is totally population driven.

18. Ban single-payer health care
Seems the obvious solution. Impose punitive taxes on all medical care, and ban any nation that provides free health care to its citizens from all UN and other NGO's. Basically, make them pariah nations. In short order, the world population will begin to radically decline, and at the same time use less energy, thus alleviating global warming.
