U.S. armored vehicle destroyed in Baghdad blast
Source: AsWat Al-Iraq (Voice of Iraq) News Service

Baghdad, Nov 12, (VOI) – A U.S. army armored vehicle was completely destroyed when an explosive charge went off near a patrol vehicle in eastern Baghdad, Iraqi police said on Monday.
"An explosive device planted by unknown gunmen in Falasteen Street blew up at a late hour on Sunday evening, totally destroying a U.S. Hummer-modeled vehicle that was passing the location," an official security source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
The source did not indicate whether any casualties were reported on the U.S. side, but said that U.S. forces sealed off the scene immediately after the blast.
No comment was available from the U.S. army on the incident.

I would heartily recommend asWat alIraq to find out what's going on in Iraq. They are a homegrown Iraqi news source and are much closer to the action. They appear to lack any significant bias one way or the other. They've been available in Arabic for a long time, but aside from glancing at the headlines, I never took the time to translate the articles. They are putting more and more English material online.

1. AsWat Al-Iraq
I have been monitoring them for awhile now, you are correct, it's a great source of what's what in Iraq. Additionally Reuters helped them initially get on their feet a few years back...

3. every cable news, and even several CSPAN talking heads
pointed out that violence is way down in Iraq. This explosion can't be true, for it would mean that the occupation is NOT going well.

4. Well, violence is down..
Just monitoring the Iraqi press I can see that. But the reasons for it are reasons that are inherently unstable.

1) Sadr's move to table his militia for 6 months (now about 3 more months, less if he continues to lose out the artist formerly known as SCIRI).
2) Sunni insurgents who are preoccupied with showing Al Qaeda who's in charge in Anbar.
3) The US bribing every sheik/thug they can find to keep violence down until November 08

7. funny, I haven't heard anything about
the military using the Osprey yet, since they flew over a couple of months ago. Probably can't find any pilots willing to take it up.
