Merck tells AIDS vaccine volunteers who got jab

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Thousands of people who volunteered to test an experimental AIDS vaccine that may have actually raised the risk of infection will be told if they got the actual shot, researchers said on Tuesday.

Merck & Co. Inc. and academic researchers said they would "unblind" the study, meaning everyone would find out who got the active shot and who got a dummy injection.

Two international trials of the experimental vaccine were stopped in September after it became clear the vaccine did not prevent infection with the AIDS virus.

The trials were conducted in the United States, Peru, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Australia and South Africa.

4. gardasil woeks -- better than expected -- and this vaccine
held out great promise in the labs.

the results in the trials were entirely unexpected.

what this is -- is very sad news for a badly badly needed vaccine.

5. Do you know anyone with AIDS?
I do. I've seen what it does to people. I would've taken the shot.

6. My little brother is HIV+ and has been for 25 years.
My beef is not with the idea but the careless methodology.

7. I'm curious as to what specific issues you have with the methodology...
...of this test. As far as I can tell, they made it about as safe as any such test can be made.

2. I always wondered who these brave souls are who test drugs
Until I met a homeless man who did it for the money. And he was not stupid, he knew drug testing was high risk but he thought it was better than getting a job, easier too.
