Mass grave unearthed in southern Baghdad

BAGHDAD - A mass grave filled with badly decomposed bodies was unearthed Saturday in southern Baghdad, where relatives of people missing in the neighborhood gathered at a mosque in hopes of learning the fate of their loved ones.

It was the third mass grave found in Iraq this month.

The remains were found in Baghdad's mostly Sunni Dora neighborhood, placed in black plastic bags and transferred to a Shiite mosque nearby, according to a police officer at the mosque. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release information.

Earlier this month, U.S. and Iraqi officials said they found 29 bodies in the Lake Tharthar area of the once restive western Anbar province. And another 17 victims were discovered in a brushy area near a school in Hashimiyat, northeast of Baghdad.

It was 9 months since the USSR army left. The police, kind of rag tag, different uniforms, and just a semblence of organization, entered one of the KGB-Military holding areas (for vehicles, tanks, and weapons). They noticed different aged concrete in every corner of one building.

Hundreds of corpses were found, dating back to the 1950s, the newest from the early 1980s. The idea of a free press was still new to them, but this, and other events, put some spine in everyone, making them realize again what they had accomplished. They threw off the soviet yoke, mostly without violence, and at great personal risk.

Iraq differs in that these folks would not have been buried over the last two years BUT FOR OUR INVASION AND OCCUPATION.

I like that in foreign policy. Predicability, reliability, well thought out positions, and consistency.

We find Iraqis and torture and kill them, then stage raids with scores of men and choppers to smuggle the bodies into areas where the people want to kill Americans, just for the sake of burying the bodies?

And we do this expecting the people in the area to leave the bodies buried for us or other Iraqis to find months later, rather than report on what they saw, dig up the bodies, and show them?

(Actually, I think the third "mass grave" was an anonymous report that the police and US Army in the area denied--the denial was buried in a fairly unrelated BBC story, the anonymous report was widely spread about. But it might have been another non-mass non-grave I'm thinking about.)

I think if you read between the lines the people of Iraq need to wake up and take control of their own destiny. Thugs and bandits ran sections of Iraq even during Saddams reign.There were places that Saddam avoided like the plague also.
Iraqi's have to relize they are stronger then the thugs/bandits soon or they will forever be lost sheep cowering in the dark.
