Give Peace A Chance - Group Says Wearing Their Shirts on Campus Has Caused Quite a Stir
Source: FloridaToday.com

Students at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High are waging a war on peace.

It all started when sophomore Skylar Stains decided to have Peace Shirt Thursdays. Skylar and her friend, Lauren Lorraine, started wearing peace shirts and soon recruited more friends to wear them. Now, the "Peace Shirt Coalition" as they call themselves, has close to 30 students from all grades. But what started out as a light-hearted gesture soon started to be taken out of context. Students started approaching the group members, yelling obscene things at them, said Lauren.

"People just turned on us like that," she said. "At least 10 boys stood up and yelled things at me at once, and we couldn't even walk through the halls without a harsh comment being made."

The heckling began early in the school year, according to group members. They say they were putting small posters promoting peace on friends' lockers with their permission. They thought it was OK, because the cheerleaders and football players had signs on theirs. Eventually, though, group members say they were told by the school's administration they could no longer hang up the posters. "People tore them down and drew swastikas and 'white power' stuff on them," Lauren said.

High School students wearing Peace T-Shirts are attacked and yelled at by other students who scream obscenities, wear Confederate Flags, and say they love war.

Amazing.

I'm sure those peace hating students will be our future fighters against the scourge of Islamo Fascism. Wait, what am I thinking?

8. Kids are stupid
Having been the target of relentless bullying in early high school, I've found that most of my former tormentors have grown up to be decent people.

Humans are just assholes when they are adoloescents. Most people get better.

26. My experience- 100% opposite.
All the folks I knew from high school (good and bad) are exactly the same people. Just older, slower, fatter and their "blurt filter" has gotten much thicker.

17. How very true.
There were probably hundreds (if not more) of others that took it for the jesture it really was and are peace loving. It only takes a few war mongers and that's what gets the attention and the bad rap for those kids that meant well. The bad attention purposely ruined it for those that love peace with their warlike tactics. WTF else is new?

7. THAT'S MY ALMA MATER! I'm speaking there this weekend! LOL!
I'm back this weekend for my 30th Reunion! I was Sr. Class President, so I'm the featured speaker at dinner Saturday night.

What's bizarre about this is the history of the school. It started out in the sixties as an open campus. No schedules, come and go as you please, just be responsible for your work. It turned into a "regular" high school after a few years. After the population of Cocoa Beach declined, it was merged with the middle school next door (which I also attended). But it was always a hip campus, at least when I was there in the seventies...maybe because we were all stoned. Now it's been turned into a "baccalaureate" campus, and you have to apply to get in. I guess being intelligent doesn't make you smart. I'll be sure to bring this up in my comedy routine...er, speech.

Here is the t-shirt I designed for the reunion (Cocoa Beach's nickname is "Small Wave Capital of The World," and is home to pro surfer and one-time Bay Watch co-star Kelly Slater, who also happened to be a part-time worker-bee for me when I published US SURF Magazine)...

9. Well, talk to them about
the 1st Amendment and civil discourse. And that being for peace doesn't mean being against the troops. And how being for the Confederate Army means treason.

You know, basic American history stuff.

10. Well, I won't be seeing many of these twits
Just my own classmates. I'm truly shocked that it's come to this. But understand, it was a strange campus...our mascot was the Minuteman...the patriot AND the missile! Yup...our logo was the Revolutionary War minuteman standing alongside the Minuteman ICBM, I kid you not. We had a big Minuteman missile replica standing in the commons area.

12. Cocoa Beach was/is the "dormitory" community to the space center.
Much less so now. We were all kids of "rocket scientists." My stepfather was head of the Delta Missile program. It was a very surreal upbringing.

14. Did you read the comments to the article?
I just can't get over how anyone would believe that wearing a Confederate T-Shirt is supporting the US. Or the troops. Is there some history there I don't understand?

If it's anything like my high school, at least 50% of them still live in town and their kids attend the same school.

21. reminds me of Stephen Downs, who was arrested for buying a "Peace on Earth/
Give Peace a Chance" t-shirt at a mall--and then wearing it! Of course, he was immediately lambasted--criminal, attention-grabbing lunatic, Black Bloc-er dissident in our glorious corporate fiefdom, etc. The thing with any authoritarian system is that it enables most any punk to rough up someone they dislike with the real or imagined backing of the beloved System.

Here are a group of kids trying to promote something positive, and they get cursed at, have swastikas drawn on their stuff (!)...WTF has this country become? When did the concept of Peace On Earth become so threatening to people? I don't get it, I truly don't.

28. God bless America, huh?
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 09:28 AM by boricua79
I'm always tickled when the true face of much of America reveals itself. I much rather deal with honest enemies than those that say they love you but secretly despise you.

This is why Republicans took hold of power in this country for 2 decades. There's an awful lot of "dumb people" out there (as George Carlin would say).

Apparently, we're not ready for peace.

How I would love to see all those kids who yelled obscenities given an M-16 and dropped off in Baghdad. Let's see how much they love war and "white power" there. The Iraqis have their own "power"...it's called IEDs.

30. I can understand the school's position, yet
The behavior of the kids who take the posters and write "white power" on them should have had some consequences appropriate to the offense, like detention helping the janitor or something suitably humiliating with the appropriate level of public service involved.

..even in high school act out like they weren't given all their due brain cells and the ones for Peace are the ones who think things through and want a better world.

This little group of tyrants sound like prime fodder for the bushites cannon..I bet their parents can't wait to send them over to the bushit created viper's nest in the Middle East so they can get their limbs blown away and come home without recourse.

one sign they anti-peace protesters put up. Another: "If peace is the answer; it must be a stupid question."

I wonder how many of these good little fascists will be signing up to go to Iraq?
