Dems Obey and Murtha Say Pentagon Using Scare Tactics: Goading Congress into passing war spending
Source: NYT/AP

In their latest tussle with the White House on the Iraq war, two leading House Democrats said Tuesday the Pentagon was using scare tactics to try to goad Congress into passing another war spending bill. And Reps. David Obey and John Murtha said they won't bite. Obey, D-Wis., chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, and Murtha, D-Pa., head of the panel's Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, said they won't support more money for the war this year unless President Bush accepts a timetable for troop withdrawals.

Last week, the House passed a $50 billion bill that would keep operations afloat for several more months, but sets a goal of bringing most troops home by December 2008. After Bush threatened to veto the measure, Senate Republicans blocked it.

''If the president wants that $50 billion released, all he has to do is to call the Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, and ask him to stop blocking it,'' Obey told reporters.

Obey and Murtha convened the rare recess-week news conference to counter Pentagon reports that the military will have to take drastic steps next month if it doesn't get the money soon....

1. The major caveat:
"they won't support more money for the war this year"

This is setting up the inevitable capitulation in January.

2. Obey won't back down
He's tough. He's stubborn. And this administration has pissed him off. When he says, "no more money" he means it.

Not my congressman. I grew up in his district. Now I live just two miles from the border and I see him on a regular basis at events in my area. If I know anything about Dave Obey I know he's a straight shooter.

But seeing what's been happening in Congress the past couple of years, I understand your skepticism completely.

6. Great: You recognized what they're doing
Now be sure it gets mentioned at every appearance: The Pentagon is using scare tactics. If Bush wants his money, he'll take it with the strings attached. He's been spending irresponsibly and without any restraint for six years. It's time the will of the people started to get some play, and the people don't want to fund endless war with nebulous promises that it all may turn around here one of these days. We're not seeing any progress, our people are still dying, and Iraq and Afghanistan are more dangerous places than ever. It's a colossal fuck-up and Bush doesn't get to run it anymore.

Repeat it again and again: The Pentagon is using scare tactics. The Pentagon is using scare tactics. The Pentagon is using scare tactics. The Pentagon is using scare tactics. The Pentagon is using scare tactics. The Pentagon is using scare tactics.

10. No, *war* is a racket, not the warriors (they are the ones being used, bless their hearts)
Let's not confuse the foot soldiers with the cabal.
