Vick faces $900,000 bill for dog care
Source: CNN

The government asked a federal court Tuesday to order former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick to keep on hand assets valued at more than $900,000 -- the amount earmarked for the care of 54 pit bulls.

The animals were found on his property when a dogfighting operation was busted last April.

Vick turned himself in to authorities Monday to get a jump start on serving his sentence for running the ring.

In a motion filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson noted that Vick, in his plea agreement, agreed to pay "restitution for the full amount of the costs associated with the disposition of all dogs" in the case.

2. Those dogs must be living at the Four Seasons.
Good for them. They deserve some compensation for enduring that asshole.

3. Not really. The bill would be about right
A big dog costs about $1,000 to $2,000 a year for food, vet bills, supplies. Say each dog will live another ten years. So for 54 dogs, $900,000 would be about right.

6. If you are stating the cost would be for the duration of the dogs life
then I think you are wrong.

If until they find homes for the dogs is the cost then I would agree.

7. Most dogs taken from fighting rings can never be put up for adoption
In fact many States have laws that forbid it and require the dogs be automatically put down.

So yes, I am assuming that if these dogs are kept alive, they will need to be provided for the duration of their lives.

12. If they are not suitable to be in family homes then IMO they should be put down.
But then again, if Vick will be picking up the tab it might be okay to maintain them until they die naturally.

But then again, they are taking up space that could be better use for dogs suitable for adoption.

16. There are lots of sanctuaries for certain type of animals, though
There, even if not adoptable, they can live a good, healthy, fun life.

15. I read somewhere that most of Vick's dogs turned out to be adoptable.
Apparently he sucked at breeding vicious dogs.

Whatever, I'd love to see him forced to foot the bill for these mutts for the rest of their natural lives. Maybe the adopters could get a subsidy for their care. Kind of hate to see them locked up in a kennel for the rest of their lives.

8. dog board at a kennel where I live is $25 per day. Multiply that by 54 dogs, not even
counting vet bills, and it is almost $500,000 per year.

9. Well, IMHO, he should be made to buy, for every kid in America who wants one, a puppy for Christmas.
It's probably the only way he'll be able to redeem himself.
