LINCOLN - Attorney General Jon Bruning will pull out of the U.S. Senate race, activists in the Nebraska Republican Party said today.

Bruning was returning to Lincoln and expected to formally announce his decision later in the day.

Bruning attended a campaign fundraiser Monday night in New York with Omaha businessman David Sokol, who is Bruning's finance director.

Former Omaha Mayor Hal Daub, who dropped his Senate bid in September, said party officials in Washington pressured Bruning to get out to clear the field for Mike Johanns, the popular former governor and U.S. agriculture secretary.

1. Which leaves one GOPer remaining challenging Johanns
Bruning's exit would leave Schuyler businessman Pat Flynn as the sole Republican challenger to Johanns. Flynn has never run for political office, but says he won't back down.

"Our resolve has only gotten stronger," Flynn said Tuesday. "The constitution guarantees that citizens, not the political establishment, have the right to choose a member of their own party to represent them."

After Hagel announced he wouldn't seek re-election, Republicans worked quickly to present a united front, fearing a strong Democratic run by former governor and U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey.

Dems are pulling this same shit by trying to push out everyone but Bob Kerrey.

7. Bush still controls
the GOP. Without much effort any independence or "moving on" by the squashed GOP is strictly forbidden. Offices are rewards for cronies. Cronies rubber stamp Bush agenda. Better, they stay irrelevant to keep their jobs and feed on pork. The party members of the GOp have no choices whatsoever. As for the remaining challenge to Johanns he has no chance at all simply because he thinks there is a role for a loyal GOP independent of the Bushes. It is the Imperial party only.
