Japan stands by its renewed 'scientific' whale slaughter
Justin Norrie, Tokyo
November 24, 2007

LUIS Pastene's name is virtually unknown in the anti-whaling countries of the Western world. But the Chilean-born marine biologist feels their wrath every November when Japan's whaling fleet sets out on another expedition to cull hundreds of whales in the name of science.

"I'm getting so tired of the biased articles I read in Western newspapers each year at this time," says Dr Pastene, who supervises nine scientists studying whale samples at Tokyo's Institute of Cetacean Research.

It is the work his team does here that drives Japan's "scientific whaling" program, and in turn provokes international outrage. Invariably, he says, the substance of his research is lost amid invective from activists. "It's time someone told the truth," he insists.

The truth, in simple terms, is that Japan's giant 8030-tonne factory ship, the Nisshin Maru, and three smaller whaling boats, left last Sunday for the Antarctic Ocean on the biggest scientific whale hunt in history. The fleet is intent on slaughtering as many as 935 minke whales, 50 fin whales, and, crucially, 50 of the vulnerable humpback whales protected by an international moratorium since 1966.

1. Scientific, my ass
Who, other than someone biased and paid to say so, supports them? As far as I've heard, the majority of the zoology community is very firmly against this.

:dunce:

Even if they weren't, this would still be a monumentally stupid thing to do.

2. When they start taking humpbacks, ESPECIALLY if Sea Shepherd or
Greenpeace gets it on video/photo all hell is going to break loose on this.

5. Indeed: "rational use of whale stocks in future"
Edited on Fri Nov-23-07 12:32 PM by Barrett808
As Dr Pastene points out, the main purpose is to obtain the scientific information that will allow a "rational use of whale stocks in future". In other words, it might be said that Japan is killing whales to justify more killing — an irony that is not lost on its fiercest critics.

Yes, whales are a "resource" to be exploited.

4. The whales slaughtered for "science" are sold as food
for a handsome profit.

Total sham.

9. Food That Nobody Wants
Most of the whale meat is sitting in warehouses going bad. Nobody wants it.
70% of Japanese are opposed to whaling.

10. Food that some people don't want
They wouldn't be doing it for the fun of it. Someone is buying it, and someone is eating it.

14. they do it because they don't like being told they can't.
that was the reason in something i read last year. most japanese don't like or eat whale meat but they keep hunting whales because their pride can't take being told NO. they do this every year to show that they can do what they please.

just like a bunch of spoiled kids.

8. Indeed: "Most slaughtered whales 'pregnant'"
Most slaughtered whales 'pregnant'
July 24, 2007

More than half the whales killed by Japanese whalers in the Antarctic last summer were pregnant, the Humane Society International (HSI) said today.

The group said that of the 505 Antarctic minke whales killed, 262 of them were pregnant females, while one of the three giant fin whales killed was also pregnant.

The findings came from a review of Japanese reports from their most recent 2006-07 whale hunt in Antarctic waters and were released ahead of the resumption of a Federal Court case the HSI is taking against Japanese whaling company Kyodo Senpaku Kaisha Ltd.

Japanese whalers take hundreds of whales each year in Antarctic waters for so-called scientific study purposes.

"These are gruesome statistics that the Japanese government dresses up as science", HSI spokeswoman Nicola Beynon said in a statement.

11. I've been angry against this for years, but those numbers are OBSCENE.
This will become the first example of extinction of a species under the cloak of scientific interest.

Japan may operate under a more restrictive form of Democracy, but if 70% of the population is against whaling (and the yearly slaughter of hundreds of dolphins), I don't understand why it continues.

Too many endangered animals seem to be in demand only because of their rarity.

15. Well there is information they can get from it
Age, maturity state, genetics.

Much of the early information on whales did come from whalers, just like a lot of fisheries information comes from commercial fisheries.
But it is certainly not the only way. Satellite tags, photographic studies (for identifying individuals). Plus studying the ones that wash up on shore every so often. The Japanese claim of scientific whaling is a smoke screen. The industry is heavily subsidized. And no one wants the meat; they can't give it away.

I also question the population estimates the Japanese "scientists" use. They are inflated for their own purposes. None of these specis can take ANY harvest. They are slow-growing, slow to mature and for that reason slow to replenish the population. There are some fish species like this as well- sharks in particular share these characteristics and it why I believe the harvest of sharks needs to be sharply curtailed. But that's neither here nor there.
