Military training program for teens expands in US
Source: Yahoo News

CHICAGO (AFP) - Dozens of teens dressed in uniforms provided by the US Marines stand at attention in the gym of a Chicago public high school as a drill sergeant goes through a list of the day's do's and don'ts.

Bring your books to class. Come for extra help if you need it. And wear your uniform with pride.

"Young men, you think you can get a haircut and say I'm done for two or three weeks. WRONG," Sgt. Major Thomas Smith Jr. intones.

"Young ladies. There's been no problem with your uniforms but there is a problem with your ties. Again, I will go through it again. Wear your ties when you come to my class."

One in 10 public high school students in Chicago wears a military uniform to school and takes classes -- including

20. These programs are voluntary!!!
Nobody forces the youth to join programs like this.

Believe it or not some Americans want to serve their country and not sit behind a computer and complain while others fight.

If you don't like the military fine, there are plenty of other ways of making a living, and in some places smoking pot and doing nothing is an equally acceptable life.

Hell I might try it when I retire.

The JROTC program has been around for years, and is volunteer only, If you don't want to join fine, go and do something else.

Everyone clam down, your children are not going to be taken away in their sleep by the Evil Marine fairy.

RLTW!

22. If You Don't Want to Join?
This is brainwashing pure and simple. Our children are not old enough to vote, to drink, to sign a contract. Why are they old enough to make the decision to join a military preparation program?

Do the parents have to sign for this?

23. Yes they do
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 03:14 PM by billy173
Parents have to sign consent forms for their children to join JROTC.

Nobody is making them do it, it is sorta still a free country you know.

Relax everyone, children are not being drafted.

And this has nothing to do with the Boy Scouts either.

RLTW!

4. Disturbing.
This is fucking creepy and wrong for so many reasons. You can't tell me students in these programs get any kind of balanced education in history and politics. Public schools are bad enough, this is monstrous. I'm reminded of Nietzsche "The best way to corrupt a youth is to teach him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently." This kind of rigidity and uniformity may be great on the battlefield, but I think it sucks for education.

10. Military training
Nothing new here that I can see. This type of high school programs, NJROTC, have been around since the 70's at least, maybe earlier.

11. Nothing new?
"At Chicago's Marine Military Math and Science Academy, the first public Marine academy in the nation"

It's not a program within a school - it's the entire school, so that's all they are exposed to within those walls for years at a time.

14. So What
Are the students there assigned to that school as they would be any other school, or is it the type of school that the student must apply specifically for and be qualified to be admitted. Is the emphasis "Marine" or math and science. Thousands of kids graduate every year from "Military academies".
Almost all are private schools, but some consider them an excellent educational opportunity with a little discipline thrown. Remember he United States operates four military academies.

16. The issue here
is that it's public dollars, not private, to create an entire environment of militarism in our youth - not just a class, and no interaction during the day with other youth who are not militarized.

When that's done with private dollars, people have a right to spend their money in that way, just like they have the right to teach their kids creationism in an environment where they are embedded in a religion culture. Using public tax dollars to create that environment for children though, is entirely different thing.

I'm guessing from your comments that you have no problem with children being militarized, no?

21. Public Dollars
Again, is it a voluntary program or is it mandatory program. Is the emphasis of the program on being a good marine, or is the emphasis on Math and Science. These are what should define whether a program is useful, not some preconceived notion that just because a kid wears a uniform in High School that he is automatically headed for the SS when he graduates. Public Funds support all five of the Service Academies and countless ROTC programs in the country. BTW, having spent 24 years in the Navy, I do not see a disciplined environment as necessarily bad.

You'd think a story like this would have some real snappy and compelling visuals.

So, is there a Peace Academy, too? Or isn't there funding for that?
