Kosovo gets pro-independence PM
Source: BBC

Kosovo's parliament has approved a coalition government led by Hashim Thaci, a former guerrilla leader who is pushing for independence from Serbia.

Mr Thaci, 39, has pledged to steer the UN-administered province to formal independence in the next few weeks.

Parliament voted 85-22 to back Mr Thaci's Democratic Party in a coalition with the Democratic League of Kosovo.

The independence plan has support from most EU states and the US, but Serbia and Russia strongly oppose it.

This could be a problem - what will Serbs do - many of them regard Kosovo as the 'heart' of Serbia? How far would Russia go in supporting them?

2. The problem is what happens in Kosovo AFTER independence.
I don't think that the Serbians really want another war, but I also don't think they'll stand by and allow the Albanian Kosovars to resume their ethnic cleansing of the Serbian Kosovars. About 250,000 Serbian Kosovars have been burned out of the territory since the U.N took over, and over 150,000 are left. If the Kosovars will protect the rights of their Serbian minority, I think Serbia will let the territory go. If the Kosovars use independence as an excuse to "ethnically cleanse" their new nation of the last remaining Serbians (who have lived there for 1,500 years...much longer than the Albanian Kosovars) we'll probably see a war.
