Nine state parks in Bay Area picked for closure (CA)

Nine state parks in the Bay Area - including one that is the largest in Northern California - would be closed under the budget proposed today by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The parks, which would not close until the governor and Legislature agree on a spending plan sometime later this year, would be off-limits until the state's financial situation improves, officials said.

Money will be spent for patrols to keep people out of the closed parks, officials said.

Statewide, the governor has proposed closing 48 sites. For a map of all the parks picked for closure, go to

The next phase will be sales to the highest bidder.

17. Your state is in deep financial trouble just like mine...
and they are using it to steal our public lands and close our public schools. Here in Illinois there is a crisis with the public transportation.

Yet our governor and the Mayor Chicago won't say why we don't have money. Could it be uncontrolled illegals who stress our budget? Corporations who have gone off-shore and don't pay taxes (failure of NAFTA)? People having lower paying jobs who pay less taxes in the end...or none.

They don't act to tax the rich or stop the corruption in their own back yard by corporations. The middle class can't take the tax burden since they are disappearing. The poor don't pay taxes neither do the "international" corporations.

They act like we are the problem when it is their bad political policy (costly illegal wars...thus no public funds), management and lack of enforcement (holding corporations accountable to the community, taxes, patent theft, etc.) which is. It is on purpose to destroy our wealth and resources (steal it for the few) and remove our democracy.

Seems we are up a tree!

3. The CA budget process is ridiculous
Because of all the damned referrenda we've passed regarding the budget, we've tied the hands of the legislature. Every time the economy takes a slight downturn the budget goes into the toilet and they have to make massive cuts all over the place, then the economy improves and they inch up spending again. It's like a governmental boom-bust cycle. And now Arnold wants another referendum on the budget process! ARGH!

21. There won't be a bust or boom economy
since the debt is unending and on purpose. Those jobs can't come back. The rich won't pay their share.

I am probably a little defensive of attaining a half a century in age though, as I turn the big 5-0 in October myself. And I most definitely am not old! Funny how your perception of what is old keeps changing with each birthday! Have a good one, anyone and I hope that you can celebrate at the park.

including national parks . . . all because we piss away so much of our national treasure on totally unnecessary weapons and warfare . . . it's all about choices, and our government(s) consistently make bad ones . . .

19. California has been under attack because it is "liberal"
They, I believe, are out to destroy and rob this most beautiful, progressive, and wealthy state. Like LA they want it Republican. They want California on it's knees. California with their wealth and intellectual power almost took over politically. Can't take that away from Wall Street and DC.

RWers took the technology sector and gave it to 3rd world countries (like China). They burn it (arson blamed on mentally ill, etc.). They rob it (Enron) and high priced BP oil from Alaska (pipe line paid for by our own tax dollars and BP profits). BP does not pay royalities for our land and oil. DA!!

22. It's happened before - I can remember Silver Strand and Carlsbad being closed
They just stop posting lifeguards, and parking becomes free because there is nobody to operate the toll booths.

The ocean and sand are still there, just nobody official to haul your damn fool ass out of the surf if you get into trouble.

Edited on Fri Jan-11-08 05:26 PM by mac2
Everything is for sale in America. Have you not heard about the highways (built by tax payers)in Indiana, etc. for sale to Spain?

Niagara Falls (Mohawk power plant built by the citizens of Buffalo at great cost)sold to British energy company and now used to power Toronto, CN not cheaper power for Buffalo. Cheap and clean power is why Buffalo prospered attracting many manufacturing companies, etc. They lost half their population since the 70s. Out to destroy America? You bet PNAC.

Read Silent Theft. The government is giving away pretty cheap everything for profit of the few elite. Our Common Wealth stolen right under our eyes.

They even have a department for it in the State Department. This treason and our government is helping them.

Wake up America. It is a go even though they don't talk about it on the national news.

Impeach Arnold and Bush.

It just means you are on your own. The good news is they can't collect fees for parking, day use, etc.

28. not according to the article
it states
Money will be spent for patrols to keep people out of the closed parks, officials said.

So, they'll spend money to keep people out of their own parks, but they won't spend money to keep them open? Why don't they just charge people a small fee to go enjoy the parks?

39. Private security companies are cheaper than rangers.
That's probably what they're thinking. One guard can keep a park empty, and doing so eliminates the need for everything from rangers to electrical and garbage service.

Some of those parks will be easier to close than others. Railtown is cool, and easy to keep closed because it's fairly small. Unless you equip those guards with dirtbikes I don't see how you could keep people out of some of these other parks though.

35. Too bad you can't close down some prisons instead.
But that would piss off the prison guards' union.

Seriously, Golden Staters, you have 80,000 people in prison for non-violent crimes, including 30,000 people for drug offenses. Why don't you lighten up and save yourselves some money? Save the prisons for the people we're afraid of, not the ones we're just mad at.

Tourist revenue is a big part of the deserts economy, and the tram up the mountain is a well known draw. I can't imagine the Palm Springs/Palm Desert councils accepting this one without some fireworks.

I also see that Fremont Peak is on the list. I'm going to be hiking there Sunday, weather permitting!

Anything that might bring solace--peace of mind--to all the people who have been so fucked by Bush. People who need to get away and go to incredible places of beauty and be soothed. Yeh, go right ahead.
