Nelson's support shows broad Obama appeal
Source: Omaha World Herald

BY JAKE THOMPSON
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON — Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska will endorse Sen. Barack Obama today in the Democratic presidential campaign.

The endorsement may serve to highlight the Illinois senator's message that he would change the tone in Washington and work with people in both parties.

Nelson, who has the most conservative voting record among Senate Democrats, has worked with Republicans on tax cuts, homeland security and judicial nominations.

The Obama campaign said Friday it would announce a major Nebraska endorsement today in a conference call with reporters. A Nelson spokesman said the senator would have a political announcement today.

1. I'm stunned by this, so congrats. Still...
Nelson is one of the most despicable DINO senators on the Democratic side.

There are a number of Republican senators I like more.

And I'd say this whether he was supporting Edwards, Hillary...or even Kucinich.

Nelson reminds me a lot of Zell Miller and LIE-berman.

I just can't stand the man. barf.

Nelson's votes in the Senate have often placed him at odds with the leadership of his party. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) has said that Nelson is probably the most conservative Democrat in the Senate. This perception is supported by a National Journal congressional vote rating from 2006, which placed Nelson to the right of five Senate Republicans (Gordon Smith, Olympia Snowe, Arlen Specter, Susan Collins, and Lincoln Chafee). Mary Landrieu was the only other Democrat to place to the right of any Republicans (she placed to the right of Chafee). <6> A similar 2007 National Journal congressional vote rating went even further, placing him to the right of eight Senate Republicans (the above five as well as Richard Lugar, Norm Coleman, and Mike DeWine), with Landrieu once again placing to the right of Chafee and being the only other Democrat to place to the right of any Republicans.<26>

Nelson was one of only two Democratic senators to vote against the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002. Nelson is strongly opposed to replacing the income tax with a national sales tax, a position that finds favor with increasingly many conservatives. He has voted with Republicans on matters of bankruptcy reform, environmental protection, lawsuit reform, and trade. In 2004 he was one of only three Democratic senators to vote to invoke cloture on the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment; in 2006 he was one of only two Democratic Senators to vote that way.<27> He was the only Democratic senator to vote against a 2006 bill that would have extended federal funding for Stem Cell Research. He has, however, voted consistently against drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He has also opposed President Bush's plan to send an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq. <7>. Early in Bush's first term he voted with the majority of his party against scrapping President Clinton's expansive new rules on ergonomics regulation for workers; many of his fellow conservative Democrats like John Breaux, Max Baucus, Blanche Lincoln, and Zell Miller voted with Republicans on the issue.

On July 12, 2007, Nelson broke with his party in a vote in the Senate Appropriations Committee, restoring funding to Vice President Dick Cheney's office.

4. It wouldn't surprise me if Nelson voted for Bush/Cheney
in '00 and '04.

That's how untrustworthy this POS is.

7. Shit. As an Obama supporter I don't like this at all...
It is stuff like this that will make Obama loose every vote from Democrats on DU. Thank god there are only about 100,000 sprinkled around the world.

6. It tells me that Obama can get the votes of people who voted for Bush....
Reality check: we cannot win the election, no matter who we nominate, unless we can get people who voted for Bush to vote Democratic this time! We can't win with the just the same vote totals as last time.

Obama can do this better than anyone. He appeals to independents, moderates, as well as liberals.

9. Reality check- pander to the right- enable and legitimize their policies and lose
Edited on Sat Jan-12-08 10:05 AM by depakid
That was the "strategy" from 1994 through 2004- with remakaeble results.

Republicans won every time, despite campaigning on some very unpopular policies.

12. That is so true
I remember getting the same old if we can just swing enough Republicans to our cause then we will have the votes... Screw them they created a fiasco in Iraq a war without end that our kids and grandkids will have to pay for all the while the greedy and corrupt corporations get all the money and pay us some peasly ass salary... I am sick of 60 hour work weeks just to keep up... I want time with my family... I don't want to worry about getting sick and losing my house... I'm fed up with this shit about how we have to suck up to the enablers of Bushie politics.... Its way past time for change... So I don't care about Bill Nelson of Nebraska... I am voting for John Edwards he is the only candidate that has spoken about the issues that are real to me and the more people that realize this the better off we will all be... JE has not once endorsed sucking up to any DINO or Repuke to get votes.... enough of this blather....

16. JE and the war
Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 02:49 AM by ngant17
But JE didn't just vote for IWR, he went one step further and co-sponsored the Iraq war, and then he defended it for months after the invasion. He didn't have a change of heart until 3 years later. JE and peace? Now there's a reaction in slow motion, to say the least. 3 years!! For a candidate to make a slothful about-face like that, we could as well have a different president by then.

14. Obama brings people together.
I really do think he can heal things and create a better country for all of us. Just to visualize this as our goal will do wonders.
