AMSTERDAM, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Two Dutch soldiers have
been killed fighting insurgents in Afghanistan as part of
the international force there, the Dutch chief of staff
said on Sunday.

The soldiers were killed in separate incidents on Saturday
in the Deh Rawod area of southern Afghanistan and two
Afghan soldiers also died in the fighting, Defence Chief of
Staff Dick Berlijn said in a statement.

The deaths bring the total number of Dutch soldiers killed
in Afghanistan to 14, according to information on the
Defence Ministry's Web site. Deh Rawod is seen as a
stronghold of support for the Taliban Islamist insurgents.

1. Prime Minister Balkenende
expresses his utmost condolances etc. What a lying sack of shit this man is.

I'm sorry guys, but even you and me can see the war is not being fought for Democracy. Still the Dutch govt holds on to the course set by the least-populair American President ever.

We could do with some change, too. Unfortunately, dissenders get shot on the streets here as well. In broad daylight even.

RIP for those two soldiers, 20 and 22 years old. Good luck in Havelte

Two Dutch soldiers killed in Afghanistan by own fire

(Rewrites with Ministry comment on own fire)

AMSTERDAM, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Dutch troops forming
part of the NATO-led force in Afghanistan probably
killed two of their own soldiers while fighting
Taliban insurgents, the Dutch Defence Ministry said
on Sunday.

The two soldiers were killed on Saturday near the
southern Afghan town of Deh Rawod as Dutch units
approached Taliban forces from two sides amid heavy
firing, a Defence Ministry spokesman said.

"It was a big problem that the Taliban crossed
through the Dutch units which created an unclear
situation, adding to low visibility and lack of air
support," the spokesman said.

It was "very likely" that the two Dutch soldiers,
aged 20 and 22, were killed by fire from their
compatriots, and an investigation had been
launched to find out what had happened, he said.

4. Dutch troops kill 4 in friendly fire (Afghanistan)
Source: AP

BAGRAM, Afghanistan - Dutch troops in Afghanistan killed two of their own men during a nighttime battle, and separately two allied Afghan soldiers they mistook for enemies, the Defense Ministry said Sunday.

"Darkness, the weather conditions and the confused situation" played a role in the mistake Saturday in the southern Afghan province of Uruzgan, Gen. Dick Berlijn, the top Dutch military commander, said in a statement.

Opposing fighters were in between Dutch units during the fighting several miles northwest of Camp Hadrian, near Deh Rawod.

The two Afghan soldiers, who were not "recognizably in uniform," also were killed Saturday after they approached a wounded Dutch soldier six miles to the south, Berlijn said.

5. Friendly fire
to add insult to injury.

Still, our count stops at 14, now. Its 14 guys too many, but it sounds better than 4,000. I'll smoke an atheist non-polluting non-violent joint for all of them tonight.
