(CNN) -- A volcano erupted in southwestern Colombia on Thursday night, prompting authorities to order the evacuation of about 8,000 people.

This video frame released by the Colombian Institute of Geology and Mining shows the eruption.

Images broadcast on Caracol, a Colombian television station, showed white smoke pouring into the evening sky from a mountain with a summit of 14,029 feet (4,276 meters).

6. Yup, volcanoes are cool, but even after 10,000 years, the earth
is still hot enough to throw up all over the place.... or was that 2 BILLION years?? I just don't get it. Seems to me things would have cooled off a tad by now. I mean, how many volcanoes do we have spewing fire and brimstone on the moon???

3. Wow!
Andesitic? How high into the atmosphere is that explosion throwing particles and what effect is it going to have on world weather patterns this coming year?

I am assuming that every one of those 8,000 had the brains and strength to get up and out. I really don't want to consider any other possibility. I've seen the pictures of Pompeii.

5. It may have implications for the rest of us, too.
I can't tell how powerful it is. But the particles can affect weather, sunshine... I don't know if it will have an effect or how long it will last.
