Russia warns of nuclear defence
Source: BBC

Gen Yuri Baluyevsky said Russia had no plans to attack anyone, but it was important that other countries clearly understood its leaders' resolve.

Correspondents say the general's remarks do not mark a shift in policy.

But they are the latest in a string of assertive comments from Moscow when relations with the West are strained.

In a speech to a military conference broadcast on state-run cable TV, Gen Baluyevsky said there were potential threats to Russia from international terrorism or countries seeking global or regional hegemony.

"We do not intend to attack anyone, but we consider it necessary for all our partners in the world community to clearly understand ... that to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and its allies, military forces will be used, including preventively, including with the use of nuclear weapons," he said.

1. *sigh* Should we really have let Chekov on board 40 years ago?

Given terrorists have no home state as such, it'll be fun to see whom Russia decides to nuke, and for the excuses given.

Isn't Russia the new hotbed for offshoring these days?

3. This clearly follows from the Bush preemptive war doctrine.

Our conventional forces suck . Our equipment is outdated and our armed forces is demoralized and riddled with corruption and desertion, therefore, since we know we could get our asses kicked by even the most pacifist of European forces we would go nuclear in the event of a conventional war.

The Russians are over reacting. Granted only Bush could reignite the cold war with his arrogant and bizarre behavior on the global scene, but to start rattling nuclear sabers when everyone knows the neocons are finished in American politics is a bit irresponsible. If they are wanting to scare America it can only help the neocons in the election because scare tactics is the only thing that has ever worked for them in the last 120 years.

So I would ask the Russians to tone it down while we decimate the Repuke war machine this November. Just be a little more patient and come January 2009 we will toast the dawn of a new era together. We've lasted 7 years, what is a few more months among freinds?

I sure hope you are correct,

But neocons don't just bring guns to a knife fight - -

They bring nukes

What I'm sayin' is

They don't exactly play by the rules

So do not be surprised if they are still in power this December

I won't

7. With an impending national and possibly globals economic
Recession they don't stand a chance. Every one knows that this downturn is a result of Bushanomics and that whole party will get the blame/.

Surprised? Given the Dems performance in Congress and the likely candidates, I pretty well expect it.

10. The Russian are not overreacting
They are drawing a line in the sand.
People all over the world are getting sick of Pax Americana supported by Aircraft carrier groups and sabre-rattling rhetorics and real invasions.

Neocons have to be stopped somewhere. It seems even MAD doesn't work for them.
