Navy says explosive device could wash up near San Diego hotel
Source: Mercury News

SAN DIEGO - The Navy says an explosive device that malfunctioned during a training exercise is missing in the ocean near the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego and could pose a danger should it wash up on the beach.

The device is a time-delay demolition charge used to blow up enemy mines.

They Navy says it was attached to a fake mine in an explosives drill 300 yards off the coast on Friday. The primary charge exploded as intended, but did not trigger a complete detonation.

2. WTF are they doing testing depth charges 300 yards offshore?
The water isn't even deep enough to get a realistic test of how it would work. Not to mention how stupid they'd feel if it blowed up the Coronado Hotel.

The navy's a big economic presence in SD but I doubt they'd be able to live that one down.

18. Wasn't a depth charge
It was a package of about 10 lbs. of high grade explosives used to detonate mines. The dummy practice mines were at about 300 ft depth.

19. Yeah I am aware that North Island is right there
I use to swim at that beach all the time, never saw any action from the military. Doesn't the Navy have a beach just north of there for Navy families?

That's where the carriers tie up.

SEAL base is south of the hotel, at the beginning of the Silver Strand.

21. Where the SEALS train and the Del are only BLOCKS away from each other
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 06:17 PM by tomhayes
&tabGoing south From Coronado towards IB it's:
Hotel Del ---- The Shores Condos------ Naval Amphibious Base.

It's completely understandable that something like would
happen. I've seen the SEALS pop-up on the public beach and
scare surfers for fun.

The Dell are the structures with the red shingles, the SEAL
raining area is directly across from Glorieta bay park.

(And the Swastika shaped building complex you may have seen on
Google maps is a few blocks away at:

I seriously doubt that the Navy was playing with explosives barely 1 city block offshore from a hotel.

It was a Florida resort in Some Like it Hot. The exterior was used repeatedly in the fine Peter O'Toole film, The Stunt Man.
