Huckabee Hopes to Regain Momentum
Source: The Associated Press

NAVASOTA, Texas (AP) — After a disappointing second place showing in the South Carolina Republican primary, Mike Huckabee hoped a fundraiser at the ranch of television star Chuck Norris Sunday would be the start of a momentum shift in his favor.

"Starting today, we reset the clock," Huckabee said. "I woke up this morning and I thought 'the momentum is back.'"

Huckabee needed to win South Carolina to validate his win in the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3. Instead, he came in second to John McCain, who solidified a shaky GOP front-runner status that he first claimed after winning the New Hampshire primary Jan. 8.

As the first Southern primary, South Carolina was supposed to be friendly territory for Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor and Baptist minister.

1. I thought God was helping him out with this.
Or did God decide he was a sucky candidate and bailed out on him?

6. When a loser uses you for a job reference, you kick him to the curb.
I know the "evangelicals" and "fundies" are out there. I have people in my "inner circle" who belong to both groups.

BUT...as a Christian who does his best on a daily basis to NOT be a crazy son of a bitch, every time a politician steps up and declares themselves to be "chosen" by God, I get just as pissed off as all of the non-Christian intelligent people out there.

ALL Christians are NOT crazy.

SOME are. Some REALLY, REALLY ARE.

9. I think that I know what you mean, I have some acquaintances who are evangelical/
fundamentalist and I'm trying to steer clear of them, not going when I'm invited, not including them. I'll stick with "non-crazy" religious and non-religious people.

18. It's the commutations ...

It's all the commutations that Huckabee gave. And it's likely that Huckabee's stance on a women's role in marriage is really hitting him hard as well.

I suspect whatever is getting Huckabee, it's being handled through whisper campaigns (like the "black baby" phone banking that nuked McCain).

And is quickly backing away from the Huckster.

4. Huck will get some delegates on Feb 5th
I figure he may be third coming out of the big primary.

The Republican Party (and their propagandists like Coulter and Rush) attack him at their peril. He represents a very large constituency and ridiculing them with "cornpone" and the like is a mistake on their part.

7. It's the "Imus Principle"...
...in the 2004 election, people couldn't understand why Imus would be slamming the Democrats in one breath and the Republicans in the next.

But he explained it himself, very clearly, on his show:

"I want to be on the winning team."

We know that Imus is basically an asshole and that he has no principles, but never underestimate the people who simply want to "win."

Like the Freepers.

The Freeps can piss and moan all they'd like about how they want Fred Thompson to be President, and how they want a "real conservative" instead of a R.I.N.O. in office.

But do you know what they want most?

They want to WIN.

So he's not "out," but there is a balance and a fine line between what you are accurately pointing out ("He represents a very large constituency and ridiculing them is a mistake on their part") and the desire to WIN.

The LAST thing the Freeps want is a "rat" (their term of endearment for US) in the White House.

Given the playing field, their worst fear is about to bite them on the ass, because each and every one of the Republican candidates is "damaged goods."

5. When he won in Iowa ...
... he said that it was due to the influence of a 'higher power', who wanted him to win.

Why doesn't he accept that God has obviously changed his mind?

13. Guess so!
Maybe it was that "if you told us what to do with our flag, we'd tell you what to do with the pole" remark.

Hardly sounds like something a God-fearing, upstanding, moral Christian ex-minister would say, does it?

16. That was my take, as well ...
... but then I'm not a Christian - so figured I'd missed the intended Biblical nuance.

17. Not If He Keeps Talking
Every time he opens his yap, something damaging falls out. "Bible Over Constitution", "God Loves Me Best" and "Flag Pole Phallacy" are not winning slogans in America. There are still enough people around who don't vote the straight Rapture ticket to put him back among the also-rans where he belongs.
