Bodies Fall Out of Sky As Planes Collide

CORONA, Calif. Jan 21, 2008 (AP)

Investigators picked through the gnarled wreckage Monday of two small planes that collided about a mile from an airport, killing five and raining debris and bodies down on car dealership parking lots.

The two small Cessnas crashed at 3:35 p.m. Sunday near the small Corona Municipal Airport, just north of the Riverside Freeway, authorities said.

Two people were killed from each plane, and a fifth was killed inside a Chevy dealership hit by wreckage, said Wayne Pollack of the National Transportation Safety Board.

"There were bodies falling out of the sky," eyewitness Hector Hernandez told KCBS-TV. "One of them crashed into the top of a Ford Mustang, and another one fell not too far behind that one on the parking lot."

3. Why does the newspapers have to put gory details like
that in the article? "Two planes collide, no survivors, tells the story in all the detail that is needed."

5. Because it sells papers. Humankind is morbidly fascinated in death.
Deep at our core hearing about the misfortunes of others and their mortality makes us feel lucky to be alive and fortunate in our own pitiful sphere of existence.

9. Falling bodies
Dear frequent flyer,

Nope. It only takes one moron to create this kind of scenario in an unmonitored situation. Work through your logic. It is fatally flawed.

In my 8000+ hours, I have been almost run over by someone not watching. Only 1 moron is necessary.

14. I disagree.
It could also be just plain bad luck or one idiot not entering the traffic pattern correctly. With 1.2k hours surely you have had a couple of "near misses", right? This was one of those near miss situations that didn't turn out well.

18. The classical "near miss" is a low-wing lightplane descending onto a Cessna or the Cessna...
The classical "near miss" is a low-wing general aviation
aircraft descending onto a high-winged Cessna or the Cessna
climbing into the low-wing plane; because of the opposing
wing configurations, neither can see the other.

Two Cessnas is more rare, but there's no guarantee the reporter
got it right, either; some think that "Cessna" is synonymous
with any small general aviation plane.

21. What is it with all these small plane crashes?
They seem to happen daily. Just how regulated are small planes? Given the case of the 7-year old who was trying to fly across the country, it doesn't seem that they are regulated enough. How is it that they are flying over neighborhoods?

> How is it that they are flying over neighborhoods?

Generally speaking, as long as they stay out of controlled
airspace, stay out certain explicitly forbidden airspaces
(such as over the White House), and stay above 1000 feet,
they can fly anywhere they like and without talking to any
Air Traffic Controller.

When flying VFR (under "Visual Flight Rules"), each plane
depends on the eyeballs on that plane to keep from flying
into some other plane, and sometimes the eyeballs fail and
bodies and flaming bits of metal fall on suburbia.
